Marvel is no stranger to putting out behind-the-scenes featurettes about the making of their films. Those videos, however, are polished affairs, while the twenty-five minutes of footage Karen Gillan released about her time working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are decidedly, wonderfully, not.
Gillan, who has played the surly, blue-skinned Nebula in all three Guardians movies as well as in Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War, apparently snuck her iPad on set and filmed “a week in the life of playing Nebula,” including her time in the makeup chair and some scenes of her on set. (If you’re worried about spoilers, there are some, though Gillan runs through what they would be at the beginning of the clip.)
Whether Marvel really isn’t pleased with Gillan releasing this video on her YouTube channel isn’t totally clear. After five films, Gillan might be happily done with her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not afraid if she ruffles Kevin Feige’s baseball cap. Either way, it’s a fun, relatively unfiltered view of what it’s like to work on a Marvel movie, and one well worth the watch whether you’ve seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or not.
The third and final Guardians of the Galaxy movie is now in theaters, though likely for not much longer, so check it out soon if you want to see it on the big screen!
