Questlove Will Be Directing Disney’s “Live-Action” Remake of The Aristocats

You might have thought we’ve moved beyond making live-action/CGI hybrid movies about our feline friends after 2019’s Cats, but you’d be wrong! Today we found out that the remake of Disney’s The Aristocats, which came out in 1970, has a director on board.

According to Deadline, The Roots member Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, who won an Oscar last year for his documentary, Summer of Soul, will direct. Questlove will also oversee the music for this reimagining and executive produce, with Will Gluck and Keith Bunin writing the script.

We first heard of this “live-action” reimagining a little over a year ago, but the news that Questlove is now attached is new information that makes the whole project infinitely more interesting. While we don’t have too many details on what this version of The Aristocats will look like, Variety is reporting that the live-action/CGI mix will be in the vein of the recent Sonic the Hedgehog and Space Jam movies, where human beings act against fully animated co-stars. This, thankfully, means that we likely won’t see any human actors overlayed with a disturbing CGI feline form as we did in the aforementioned musical, Cats. It’s also a safe bet that some of the original film’s downright racist moments will be removed from this version, which is also a good thing.

If you need a refresher on what the original The Aristocats is all about, you can check out Mari Ness’ revisit of the movie here. The short version, however, is that a Parisian family of cats gets booted to the countryside by a jealous butler after their owner plans to bequeath the felines her fortune. With the help of a rascally alley cat, they make their way back to the city with some adventures along the way.

No news yet on when this live-action/CGI hybrid version of The Aristocats will make its way to a screen near you.
