20th Century Studios is close to releasing its movie adaptation of Stephen King’s short story, “The Boogeyman,” and has decided to convert it into a theatrical run rather than stream it on Hulu after doing impressively well in test screenings.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film—directed by Rob Savage and starring Chris Messina (Birds of Prey) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets)—had a “surprisingly muscular test screening in December.” I’m not exactly sure what “surprisingly muscular” means but hey, maybe Hollywood is catching on that folks like horror and that it can be extremely profitable for studios! THR is also reporting that King himself (pictured above) gives the movie a thumbs up, which is also a good sign.

The Boogeyman centers on a 16-year old and her younger sister, both still reeling from the death of their mother, who are targeted by a supernatural boogeyman after their father, a psychologist, has an encounter with a desperate patient in their house.
The film is produced by 21 Laps, the studio also behind Stranger Things, and in addition to Messina and Thatcher stars Vivien Lyra Blair, David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland, and Madison Hu.
We’ll be able to see them all on the big screen when The Boogeyman scares into theaters on June 2, 2023.
