SPACE OTTER! SPACE OTTER!

Sorry, were we supposed to be enthused about Star Lord? There is a SPACE OTTER in this trailer. The rest of the gang’s all here—sort of—but there is one little shot of Rocket (Bradley Cooper) hugging a space otter, and that’s clearly the most important thing about the somewhat belated return of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I’m not dragging them for being late, mind you. This is the first thing anyone says here: “We were gone for quite a while.”

And a lot has happened since we last hung out with the team in a movie theater (that little bit in Thor: Love and Thunder aside). The movie’s summary isn’t super clear about when, exactly, the story takes place:

In Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Gamora is gone, yes, but also there’s Zoe Saldana in green makeup. One can only assume she’s the Variant we got from Endgame, given that multiverses are all the Marvel rage now. We also get a good look at Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) and an, um, fleshy space thing that is both creepy and fascinating. And let us not neglect to mention the tiny, heartstring-tugging Rocket.

James Gunn writes and directs what may well be his Marvel swan song, given that he’s now one of the heads of DC Studios. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter and Maria Bakalova star.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 rockets into theaters on May 5, 2023.
