In The Eternal Daughter, Tilda Swinton plays two characters: an elderly mother and her (eternal?) daughter.
Based on the trailer, it looks like writer-director Joanna Hogg (The Souvenir) is bringing us a potential ghost story where Swinton’s characters find themselves in an old home that holds lots of forgotten memories for the mother and daughter and, potentially, spirits from the beyond.
Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:
An artist and her elderly mother confront long-buried secrets when they return to a former family home, now a hotel haunted by its mysterious past. Featuring a towering, deeply moving performance by Tilda Swinton, acclaimed filmmaker Joanna Hogg’s beguiling latest film is a brilliant and captivating exploration of parental relationships and the things we leave behind.
The movie looks eerie and appropriately haunting, and it also looks like an in-depth character piece between Swinton’s two characters. Critics who’ve seen the movie appear to agree with this assessment and have called the movie a “gorgeous” and “enigmatic” ghost story from A24.
In addition to Swinton, The Eternal Daughter stars Joseph Mydell and Carly-Sophia Davies. There’s also a cute doggo in the trailer that I really, really hope survives the film.
The Eternal Daughter will be in theaters and on demand starting on Friday, December 2nd.
