This Season of Stargirl Will Be Its Last

The CW sure ain’t what it used to be. Once upon a time, the network had a whole handful of DC Comics series running at once; now, it’s down to three. It was already announced that The Flash will end with its upcoming ninth season, and now the same is true of Stargirl, which will end with its currently airing third season.

Stargirl had an odd start, premiering on DC Universe before moving to The CW for season two. The series is about Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger), a teen girl who finds the cosmic staff of Starman and discovers that her stepfather, Pat (Luke Wilson), was involved with the Justice Society of America.

Creator Geoff Johns also created Batwoman and Superman & Lois, the latter of which seems to be the only DC series still standing at The CW. It was renewed for a third season back in March, along with renewals for Riverdale, Nancy Drew, and The Flash—all of which are now ending with their upcoming seasons.

This all comes in the wake of massive change for the network: last month, Nexstar Media Group closed its acquisition of The CW. As Deadline explained, this latest cancellation “is not a huge surprise after executives at Nexstar clearly signaled that its focus will be on retooling The CW and shifting toward unscripted content and shows that appeals to an older audience.”

With huge changes afoot at DC Studios as well, it’ll be interesting to see which DC series are still standing after the dust settles.
