Opportunity, also known as Oppy, was a rover JPL sent to Mars for a ninety-day mission. Little Oppy lasted much longer than ninety days on Mars, however, and spent the next fifteen years sending data back to us on Earth. The Prime Video documentary Good Night Oppy chronicles the robot’s journey, and the trailer for it may or may not make you cry as you follow Oppy’s brave foray over Mars’ terrain.
Over the course of 105 minutes, we will follow Oppy’s journey, which is narrated by Angela Bassett, because Oppy deserves her story told by an Oscar-nominated actor. Throughout the course of the documentary, it looks like we see Oppy’s “birth” at NASA and follow it as she lands on Mars and faces several challenges on its fifteen-year odyssey, which included whirling dust devils, among other things.
Here’s the doc’s official synopsis:
Good Night Oppy tells the inspirational true story of Opportunity, a rover that was sent to Mars for a 90-day mission but ended up surviving for 15 years. The film follows Opportunity’s groundbreaking journey on Mars and the remarkable bond forged between a robot and her humans millions of miles away.
Good Night Oppy is directed by Ryan White (Serena, Visible: Out on Television, The Keepers) and produced by Jessica Hargrave, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Brandon Carroll, and Matthew Goldberg. It will premiere in select theaters on November 4 and on Prime Video on November 23.
