Don’t cry because it’s ending—smile because at least we get to know ahead of time that the fourth season of The Umbrella Academy will be its last. Though according to Variety, “multiple sources say the final season will be shorter than the 10-episode seasons the show has done in the past.”
Netflix’s announcement says despite some timeline hijinks at the end of season three, the whole family will return: Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Colm Feore, and Ritu Arya (“Lila is definitely an honorary Brellie, especially if you ask Diego,” says the post).

Shortly after the third season was released, creator Steve Blackman discussed his four-season plan with The Hollywood Reporter, saying “When I started this thing, I sort of knew four seasons of the show. I have nothing past that in my brain, but I’ve sort of kept to a trajectory. So, I have a really good sense of what season four would be, and it should be just as bonkers as the other seasons.”
Given his other projects with Netflix, Blackman probably needed to clear his plate: He has an overall deal with the streamer, and is developing both an adaptation of the game Horizon Zero Dawn (for which Killjoys creator Michelle Lovretta is his writing partner) and a new original series, Orbital, which is set on the International Space Station. “With my collaborators, David and Keith Lynch, we’re creating a series that is unlike anything I’ve done before yet also shares my love of black humor, characters who live on the edge and wild action sequences. We can’t reveal much more than this, but we can say for certain that there won’t be any aliens,” Blackman says.
No premiere date has been announced for the final Umbrella Academy season.
