They’re Back! David Tennant and Catherine Tate Return to Doctor Who

Donna (Catherine Tate) and the Doctor (David Tennant) are one of the most beloved Doctor Who pairs. And with Russell T. Davies now back as showrunner, it looks like the two will be making an appearance in at least a couple of scenes that will coincide with 2023’s 60th anniversary celebration of the series.

“They’re back! And it looks impossible,” Davies said about the announcement. “First, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?  Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”

The new Doctor Davies is referencing is the exciting news that Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa will be the next Doctor after Jodie Whittaker bows out this upcoming fall. Davies had equally effusive things to say about Gatwa when the show broke his casting news earlier this month. “Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in second,” the showrunner said. “It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started.”

We don’t have any news yet on how Donna and Tennant’s Doctor will be making an appearance on the show. But as long as they’re on screen bantering with each other, it’s undoubtedly going to be great. I also can’t wait to see how Gatwa’s Doctor deals with it all, assuming he’ll be there as well. We unfortunately can’t jump in a TARDIS and head to 2023 to find out, though we have plenty of old Doctor Who to watch and Whittaker’s finale to look forward to in the meantime.
