Something’s out there. Out there… in the backyard. In Night Sky (formerly called Lightyears), J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek star as Irene and Franklin York, whose backyard holds an inexplicable secret: a gateway to another planet.

Naturally, it proves impossible to keep this a secret.

Night Sky‘s trailer is promising at first—and then turns into a muddle. Muddy action runs up against vague talk of secrets, with little sense of scope or theme. But with Simmons and Spacek on board, there are at least two solid reasons to give it a shot anyway. Here’s the summary:

Spanning space and time, Night Sky follows Irene (Sissy Spacek) and Franklin York (J.K. Simmons), a couple who, years ago, discovered a chamber buried in their backyard which inexplicably leads to a strange, deserted planet. They’ve carefully guarded their secret ever since, but when an enigmatic young man (Chai Hansen) enters their lives, the Yorks’ quiet existence is quickly upended…and the mystifying chamber they thought they knew so well turns out to be much more than they could ever have imagined.

The series was created by Holden Miller (a producer on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore) and has Daniel C. Connolly (a producer on Into the Badlands and Colony) as showrunner. Its eight-episode first season premieres May 20th on Prime Video.
