The Madame Web movie is weaving up an impressive cast. We already knew that Sony’s Marvel project has S. J. Clarkson on board to direct and Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, The Lost Daughter) on board starring as Sony’s first female Marvel superhero. Today, we also learned via Deadline that Syndey Sweeney, whose previous credits include White Lotus and Euphoria, has also joined the film.

In the comics, Madame Web is an elderly blind clairvoyant who has a medical condition that had her connected to life support equipment that looks like a gigantic spiderweb. Sony apparently is thinking of the character as their own Doctor Strange, and is presumably aging down the character for Johnson to play.

The Deadline article also includes the caveat, however, that sources say the project “could turn into something else” besides a Madame Web movie since the character never fought any villains in the comics. Whatever the female-centric Sony Marvel film ends up being, however, Johnson is on board to lead and will be joined by Sweeney in some capacity.

Sweeney’s casting news comes a couple of weeks before Sony’s latest Marvel movie Morbius is set to come out in theaters, a movie that has the honor of being delayed nine times ostensibly due to the pandemic.

Hopefully Madame Web will avoid the level of delays experienced by the Jared Leto-led Morbius. While we wait, we can get our Sony Marvel fix by watching the wildly successful Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Or we could just read the comics they’re based on, or watch Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man, if you prefer. Or any of the other Spider-Man movies that have been made over the years. The Spidey options are expansive, so cast your web on whatever option suits your fancy.
