New Star Trek: Picard Trailer Gives Us Whoopi Goldberg, Brent Spiner, and a Whole Lot of Excitement

Just days after we found out Star Trek: Picard’s release date (it’s March 3, if you haven’t marked your calendar yet), we get an amazing trailer that not only sheds light on what season two might be about, but also gives us a look at Whoopi Goldberg reprising her role as Guinan and evidence that Brent Spiner is back!

There is so, so much to speculate and squee about in this trailer! We get more Q (John de Lancie)—never a bad thing (for the audience, at least… not sure Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the rest of his gang would agree)—and we also see Annie Wersching as the Borg Queen. We also get our first look of Goldberg as Guinan once again and we see Spiner is back in an unconfirmed role, though I’d bet he’s playing a Soong of some sort, the ancestor of Data’s dad, Doctor Noonian Soong.

We also get confirmation that Picard’s new crew is sent back to the year 2024 by a precocious Q. In Star Trek history, 2024 is the year of the Bell Riots, which we saw firsthand in Deep Space 9 when Sisko (Avery Brooks), Bashir (Alexander Siddig), and Dax (Terry Farrell) have their own temporal trip to this period. These riots led to acknowledgement of terrible conditions for the poor in San Francisco’s Sanctuary Districts, which then inspires change in the United States. 2024 is also two years prior to the outbreak of World War III on Earth, the aftermath of which leads to humanity’s first warp flight, and then First Contact. It’s a pivotal point in human history, and if something disrupts what happens, those changes would ripple out and cause significant changes to Picard’s present day.

What does this all mean? What about all those other quick shots we saw? That Vulcan doing a mind meld with the kid in the forest? That guy with spooky eyes walking behind Picard at one point? Those hexagon things in the planet atmosphere that freak Picard out? So many questions, and weeks sadly, until we’ll get answers!

Season Two of Star Trek: Picard premieres on Thursday, March 3 on Paramount+. Following the premiere, new episodes of the ten-episode-long season will drop weekly on Thursdays.
