All the News from This Year’s DC FanDome

This past weekend, Warner Bros. presented DC FanDome, its now-annual giant announcement event revealing its massive slate of upcoming DC universe projects, showcasing a whole bunch of new trailers and first-look clips of the films and TV shows that will be debuting in the next year or so, as well as news and updates about other projects.

Those projects include new TV shows like Peacemaker and Naomi, upcoming movies like The Batman, Shazam 2, Black Adam, and The Flash, and quite a bit more.

Young Justice Season 4

Another upcoming project? The continuation of Young Justice. The show originally debuted back in 2010 and ran for two seasons before returning to DC Universe in 2019. The show’s since moved over to HBO Max, where its fourth season just debuted. To celebrate, the platform released a clip of the season’s first four minutes:

We got a first look clip of this upcoming show not too long ago, but HBO Max used the event to debut a first trailer for Peacemaker, an upcoming series about John Cena’s titular character from The Suicide Squad.

The trailer features Cena’s character getting a new gig after the events of that movie, and looks as though it’ll dig into him a bit more: we meet his dad (who looks like a real piece of work), some new missions and sidekicks, and more violent hijinks from the lovable and highly dangerous idiot. The show will debut on January 13th, 2022.

The Batman

This one’s probably the most anticipated project out of the entire event: a new look at the upcoming Batman film from Matt Reeves. This new trailer shows off quite a bit of new footage, but like the last trailer we got at last year’s event, this one isn’t lacking for the grim and gritty take on the caped crusader. The film is slated to be released on March 4th, 2022.

DC League of Super-Pets

There isn’t much to this teaser, but DC debuted a quick teaser for its upcoming animated film, DC League of Super-Pets, featuring Dwayne Johnson as Krypto the Superdog and Kevin Hart as Ace the Bat-Hound, along with Vanessa Bayer, John Krasinski, Diego Luna, Natasha Lyonne, Kate McKinnon, and Keanu Reeves. The film is due out on May 20th, 2022.

The Flash

DC’s other big anticipated film is The Flash, which stars Ezra Miller — who’s a bit of a holdover from the franchise’s Zack Snyder days. This first teaser shows what we’ve known the film will get at: the DC multiverse. This teaser shows off a couple of versions of the character, but most excitingly, it features the long-awaited return of Michael Keaton, who’s reprising his role as Batman from the 1989 film. We didn’t get a good look at him (he’s just narrating, and shows up briefly), but undoubtably, that’ll come closer to the film’s release.

The film’s currently in production, and will debut on November 4th, 2022.

The CW’s Naomi

Ava DuVernay is working on The CW’s next iteration of Arrowverse, an adaptation of Naomi, and while we didn’t get a trailer for the project, we did get a clip from the show’s early moments, featuring Naomi in class as she learns about some sort of stunt from Superman. The show is slated to debut sometime in 2022.

Behind The Scenes Updates

Black Adam

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson introduced a video that featured concept art, soundbites from the film’s various actors, and a clip of the movie’s opening. Johnson explained that the film will be a game-changer for the DCU.

Also in the mix is Aldis Hodge (who plays Hawkman), Pierce Brosnan (Doctor Fate), Noah Centineo (Atom Smasher), Quintessa Swindell (Cyclone), and Sarah Shahi (Adrianna Tomaz),

This film hits theaters on July 29th, 2022.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Jason Momoa headlines a first look at the upcoming sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, in which he’s reprising the film’s titular role. James Wan notes that the world is enormous and that they’re looking to build upon that first film to make a more mature and fun project. Yahya Abdul-Mateen will be back at Black Manta, and will be still after Aquaman, and we’ll also see the return of Amber Heard as Mera.

This film will hit theaters on December 16th, 2022.

Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods

The other big film from DC FanDome this year was an update/behind the scenes video from Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods. Zachary Levi introduces the video, noting that the film will be expanding on the lives of the characters as they learn how to be superheroes, and that their lives are upended when a pair of goddesses (Helen Mirren as Hespera and Lucy Liu as Kalypso) come to our world to cause problems. There’ll be some more mythological creatures, bigger sets, and a whole bunch of new worlds.

This film’s set to come out on June 2nd, 2023.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Movies and TV shows weren’t the only projects that DC teased at the event. It released a trailer for an upcoming video game from Rockstar Games called Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The game is set for release in 2022 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Other News

Good news for fans of HBO Max’s original shows Titans and Doom Patrol: both shows have been renewed for their fourth seasons on Warner Bros. streaming service.

Pennyworth moving to HBO Max

For a long time, DC’s adaptations were spread out all over the place, including one perplexing project, Epix’s Pennyworth. The series explores the origins of Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth, and the series is going to move from the premium channel to HBO Max in 2022.

First look at Sandman‘s Lucifer

Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is coming, and while DC FanDome didn’t release any big updates from the project, it did show off a first look at Lucifer, to be played by Gwendoline Christie.

Blue Beetle

Blue Beetle is getting an HBO Max movie, which will star Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, and which will see Angel Manuel Soto as director. The film doesn’t have a release date yet, but they did show off a first look at the costume:

Another HBO Max film is on the way: Batgirl, starring Leslie Grace. The film didn’t get a trailer, but Grace was on hand to drop some hints, noting that she’ll be sporting the character’s iconic red hair and cowl. In an additional update today, word broke that Jacob Scipio will also star in the film. There’s also no release date for this project yet.
