Last month, we got our first peek at Andor, the Rogue One spinoff prequel series about Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor. Alan Tudyk, who voices the delightfully crabby droid K-2SO, was part of the show’s initial announcement. Andor began filming late last year, but as Tudyk said in a recent interview, he’s not in it. Yet.

“I’m going to be in the show. It’s just that the story that Tony [Gilroy] is telling doesn’t involve K-2SO until later on… I can’t be too specific, but I can definitely say that I’m not going to be in the first season,” Tudyk told Collider.

Knowing that Tudyk isn’t in at least the first season of Andor seems to push the timeline back further than expected. Little is known yet about how Cassian came to join the Rebel Alliance, though he’s been resisting the Republic-turned-Empire for most of his life. Cassian’s meeting with K-2SO, a former Imperial Imperial security droid, was covered in the one-shot comics issue Rogue One – Cassian & K-2SO Special 1, but it now seems more than likely Andor will revisit that moment in the pair’s history.

But what else will it cover? Cassian, in Rogue One, is clearly plagued by some guilt over the “terrible things” he’s done for the rebellion. There’s obviously plenty of death in any Star War, but Cassian suggests more brutal and ugly things were once done in the name of resistance. To dig into the dark corners of Cassian’s past may require more moral complexity and ambiguity than the live-action sections of the franchise generally embrace.
