American Gods Season 3 Will Debut in January 2021

We finally know when American Gods will return for its third season: Neil Gaiman announced this morning that the season will debut on January 10th on Starz, noting that this season feels especially timely, and that they’ll continue to “explore what ‘America’ means to its people and to talk about immigrants—about the very different people who came to this remarkable land and brought their gods with them.”

Earlier this month, Gaiman and members of the cast gathered for the virtual New York Comic Con to talk about the upcoming season, and released a brief teaser for it.

The series is based on Gaiman’s acclaimed 2001 novel by the same name, following a man named Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), who’s recruited by a man called Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) to drive him across the country, only to find himself enmeshed in a much greater conflict for the soul of the country, waged between gods, old and new.

The series originally debuted on Starz in 2017, developed by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green. The first season adapted only part of the book, but following its conclusion, Fuller and Green left over disagreements on the show’s direction. Jesse Alexander picked up those duties for the show’s second season, which debuted in 2019, only to be replaced by producer Charles Eglee (Hemlock Grove and Walking Dead), who serves as showrunner this season. Gaiman also serves as executive producer.

This season will see Shadow—who learned last season that Mr. Wednesday is his father—retreat to the ice-bound town of Lakeside, where he’s trying to put the recent past behind him. But the gears of war are still turning, and Mr. Wednesday and his allies will try and get him to return to the fight.

We’ll find out how that works out for everyone when the series returns on January 10th, 2021.
