Producers Behind The Wandering Earth Want to Bring Cixin Liu’s Three-Body Problem to TV

It looks like Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem is finally coming to TV! Earlier this week, CX Live reported that Yoozoo Pictures, the production company behind the wildly popular Liu adaptation The Wandering Earth, is developing an adaptation of his Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy.

The series, titled The Three-Body Problem after the trilogy’s first book, is getting a 24-episode season with production starting this September.

This is great news for Liu fans (which count former President Barack Obama among their ranks), whose hopes for a Three-Body Problem series were dashed after Amazon’s attempt to buy the rights last year were challenged by Yoozoo Pictures, which says it owns all the rights. (For more background on the long and arduous efforts to adapt the trilogy, head over to the Verge.)

Given how successful (and critically acclaimed!) The Wandering Earth has been, it seems like this will be the adaptation that fans deserve. And in case you haven’t been converted yet, here’s a synopsis of The Three-Body Problem from Tor itself, which published an English version of the series (translated by Ken Liu) back in 2016:

Set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.

It’s not clear how closely the series will follow the book, whether more than one season is planned, or when the release date is. Keep an eye on this page for more updates, and in the meantime you can read The Redemption of Time, a Remembrance of Earth’s Past paraquel written by superfan Baoshu.
