Superman Cramps His Cousin’s Style in New Supergirl Season 2 Poster

Despite Tyler Hoechlin claiming at SDCC last week that he hadn’t yet tried on the Superman suit, The CW has very quickly turned around a poster of its new TV Superman standing with his cousin Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist), a.k.a. Supergirl. And it’s… well, there are a lot of lens flares going every which way.

I get the idea behind it—two strong Kryptonians, finally united—but it’s just not doing it for me. For one, Benoist and Hoechlin both look awkwardly Photoshopped together. I’m a little unclear on how their costumes manage to match so much, seeing as Kara made hers in her living room and he… well, we’ll see how the TV canon handles his pre-Kara origin story.

My real sticking point reflects one of the big Twitter reactions: He seems to be overshadowing her. It’s one thing to have Clark be Kara’s IM buddy/mentor, but this poster looks very much like the show is now Supergirl & Superman. Hopefully this is the case just for the “first look” introduction of Hoechlin all suited up, and he’ll remain what he was in season 1—a supporting character and unintentional comic relief.

Supergirl returns Monday, October 10, at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
