Blame Gotham: Wanting to get in on that sweet origin story action, Syfy is developing Krypton, a prequel series set on Superman’s homeworld.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman’s David S. Goyer conceived of the show with Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time, FlashForward). From what we know of the synopsis, the series will follow not Superman’s dad Jor-El, but his grandfather, Seyg-El:
Krypton takes place years before the Superman legend we know, when the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This drama, which is in development, follows the Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.
Little is known about Seyg-El, named for Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel. Interestingly, he’s not considered part of the canon continuity, giving Syfy more freedom in how they envision his character. So long as we get the Krypton that we saw in the beginning of Man of Steel, because that was cool.
