Miss the adventures of Aang and the gang? You’re in luck! Dark Horse Comics has announced that everyone’s favorite airbender (and his trusty friends) will continue their adventures in a new series of graphic novels beginning in 2012!
The series will continue in comic digest form and will take place after the events of the television show (lovingly rewatched here).
According to Dark Horse:
Picking up where the season three finale left off, this new series will follow the further adventures of Aang and his friends, as they help to rebuild a world torn apart by 100 years of war.
Although it has not yet been revealed who will be writing and crafting the further adventures of the Aang Gang, the stories will be guided by the show creators themselves. From series co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino:
We had a great experience collaborating with Dark Horse on [the upcoming book] Avatar: The Last Airbender—The Art of the Animated Series. We are excited to work closely with them once again to bring the further adventures of Avatar Aang and his friends to the comic world.
Readers can get a taste of the new Avatar comics on May 7th (Free Comic Book Day) with two introductory short tales, which will be packaged alongside a special Star Wars: The Clone Wars comic flip-book.
After that, Dark Horse will release Avatar: The Last Airbender—The Lost Adventures on July 13th. This 240 page comic will contain both reprints of comics previously published in Nickelodeon Magazine as well as 70 pages of brand-new material, and features the work of many contributors who worked on the original animated series.
No word yet on how the new comic series will work with the upcoming Avatar: Legend of Korra show, set to debut in November of 2011, but it’s hard to imagine events in the comic not playing in, at least subtly, into Legend of Korra, which is set 70 years after Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Regardless, 2012 is definitely set to be an exciting year for Airbender fans!
