Original Sketches Hiding in Copies of Words of Radiance!

Words of Radiance Ben McSweeney sketch

Brandon Sanderson and illustrator Ben McSweeney had some free time while they were waiting in the Salt Lake City airport this week, so they decided to drop by the airport bookstore add a little something extra to some copies of Words of Radiance!

Sanderson posted some of the art on his Twitter feed, along with the locations, so hopefully some lucky WoR fan found them by now...but if not, get thee to the SLC airport! (And possibly others, as their tour continues!)

Ben’s rendition of a Parshendi. This copy was last seen in Simply Books at Gate C6 of the airport.

Close up of a Kaladin sketch. Each of these copies has a Szeth die-cut card in them too, with a Shardhunt code.

Finally, here’s a close-up of Ben’s Szeth sketch in a Salt Lake airport copy of Words of Radiance! Sanderson also numbered each copy for release day.

Brandon talks often about "showing" instead of "telling", such as on the Writing Excuses podcast. It is one thing to write that way, but it is another to live it. While Brandon does attempt to say he deeply appreciates his fans and those who allow him to do what he loves, he has gone above and beyond in actions to "show" it. Very little of his extras, such as book annotations, his "hunts", or pursuit of making a book his way can directly link to "profit", but his love is in writing and allowing others to share in his stories and dreams. What he's gone through to make his books the way he wants them made has undoubtedly led him into difficult conversations, persuasions, and a degree of stress, and he's "shown" that it's for the fans rather than his own ego or pocketbook. It definitely has helped him sell books, there's no denying he has earned more readers, but it hasn't been his focus to win readers for their money. He wants their hearts. And he's earned them. Thanks, Brandon. You're shaping todays landscape for publishing genre fiction.
