Watch Johnny Depp Become Superhuman in the Transcendence Trailer

Warner Brothers just released the trailer for Transcendence, an artificial intelligence (complete with anti-technology extremists) thriller starring Johnny Depp:

“A terminally ill scientist downloads his mind into a computer. This grants him power beyond his wildest dreams, and soon he becomes unstoppable.”

Superhuman or abomination? Transcendence releases in April.

Hm. Dunno. Looks like another "technology is evil" thing with added anti-transhumanism.

I see some serious story problems here. That may be the fault of the trailer, though.

Anybody else thinking this is just a lawnmower man remake?

Yeah, getting a real "Me am play god" vibe. But maybe it'll play with the trope a bit?

Total Lawnmower Man, minus the Flowers for Algernon overtones. I'm getting the vibe that most of the sci fi tropes are going to look suspiciously like magic, so that when the story tells us that science is being put to evil uses, my response will be, "Oh yeah, why doesn't the writer just magic up some more pleasant application? Oh, that's right. It won't fit his thesis." But trailers sometimes mess with you like that, so I'll wait for reviews when it releases.

I'm assumign this will have a happy ending, but if it didn't, it could almost be the prequal to The Matrix.

Oh, there will be no stopping Techno-Depp. But it's OK. In the end we will be saved by The Power of Love.

I can't say I have high hopes for this one. Hoping to be proved wrong.

is there any reason that people can't have NON-EVIL A.Is?
i mean, has NO ONE in Hollywood read, say,"The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"? or Spider Robinson's Callahan stuff with Solaris?

or ANY of the stories where our "children" don't immediately go insane and/or evil and try to kill/enslave us all?
