Watch a More Detailed Trailer for Malificent

Malificent trailer

The latest trailer for Disney’s live-action version of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie in the titular role. Are we looking forward to it? Will Disney be able to do for Maleficent what Wicked did for the Wicked Witch? Signs point to no but we’ll have to wait until May to see.

"Signs point to no" is a bit of an understatement.

I honestly don't know what to make of this movie. Are they just banking on some cheekbone fetishists to make up the entire audience?

Don't get me wrong I think a movie about Maleficent could be good but the trailers do nothing to make it sound interesting at all. Just "OMG LOOK IT'S ANGELINA JOLIE AND HER (ridiculously done up) CHEEKBONES" Wut?

I'm not seeing anything here yet that makes me want to see this movie. I am slightly intrigued by the notion in there that Maleficient is actually trying to protect Aurora from... something... but we've seen that schtick before from Disney. Recently, even, in Tangled. I'll need to see more before I'll commit to seeing this. And by 'more', I mean, 'reviews that say it doesn't suck'.

Glad to see Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland is getting a sequel.

It has the potential to be good but the previews are just not bringing it. I'm just not getting from this what they want the story to be about.

Here's the thing about this movie: Malefecent is the quintessential Disney villain. I don't want to see a movie in which she is redeemed, humanized, or her tortured backstory makes her more sympathetic. I want to see a movie in which she is irrepentantly, irredeemably evil, and damn good at it.

I think a disney movie from the villains' perspective (not a hero-in-disguise, but an outright villain), showing them being a nasty, powerful, evil villain would be kind of interesting. I don't think this will be that movie. I don't think they will be able to resist the temptation to make herNot So Bad, Just Misunderstood. We'll see.

@mlinden, I'm with you. The whole "I'm not bad, I'm just misunderstood" schtick has been way overdone. I guess the fact that even Disney is doing it shows that it's now the status quo. Maybe someone will be edgy again and make villains who really are "wicked".

Angelina's character is actually correctly representing the greek mythological character of the LAMIA. A shark demon who's favorite target are little children. EverQuest 2 also gave this theme some justice. It used it as a npc and a necromacer's pet and was found largely by the coast of a island based strongly in fairy lore - The Enchanted Lands with an offshoot higher level open land of Rivervale which promointely featured halflings and fairies.... Just sayin.. it seems a bit of a rip to me since I've played the game since it was out.
