New York Comic Con Is Hardcore For Cosplay

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

You found them on the trains of Manhattan or walking across 42nd street. They sipped coffee in New York Starbucks and hopped out of taxi cabs. They even chartered buses or flew across the country, all to be in the heart of one of the biggest nerd events of the year. I’m talking about cosplayers and they invaded New York City this weekend among the over two hundred thousand fans that came out for this year’s New York Comic Con. Everywhere you looked there was some fantastic fan creation, out to win awards at the multiple cosplay contests or just out for the fun of being seen. With cosplay getting more popular every year, there were amazing costumes around every corner, and I was on the loose trying to capture as many as possible.

So here are only some of the fabulous cosplayers from NYCC 2013. See if you spot your favorite characters!

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Firefly’s always going to have great representation, but this Kaylee not only had the costume down perfectly—she had the attitude. And the shiny parasol! As the days went on her appearance became a bit infamous. Check out how she engineered her look and personality.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Fresh off her Tomb Raiding adventures, this Lara Croft looked ready to tackle the Comic Con lines. I really liked the make-shift bow and battle-wounds.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Anyone who grew up on Power Rangers would recognize this lady. The detail on this Rita costume is fantastic and doesn’t she just give off that ‘I will get you next time!’ attitude?

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Now here’s a character you don’t see played often. Met up with this Misty Knight at the Women in Marvel panel, where she teamed up with...

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

...the awesome ladies of the Carol Corp! It’s all Captain Marvel, all the time, including...

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

...this great mother and daughter combination of Captain Marvel fans!

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Speaking of mothers and daughters, this was a positively frightening combination to walk up on in the lobby. I wonder if taking a photo counts as blinking?

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

He might look closer to Carl’s age but this kid had all Rick attitude, right down to the zombie parts around his neck. He was hanging out at the Walking Dead Chop Shop, checking out the zombie makeup. Getting ready, just in case?

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Another fandom that had tons of cosplay of all ages was the Avatar universe, and these Kyoshi warriors were two of the best I’d seen.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Scarlet Witch might be reimagined in the next Avengers film, but this cosplayer decided to go old school Wanda with her fantastic cosplay.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Speaking of old school, this gentleman maug took it back to Mel Brooks’ classic Spaceballs, right down to the milk bone box as Barf.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

In the furry ear brigade, who could forget Ewoks? And human Ewoks too! I love the spiked purse, to remind people that Ewoks are deadly along with adorable?

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Coming in as one of my favorite interpretations of costumes is this great Victorian Lady Thor. The hat even has little wings, and Mjolnir never looked so fashionable.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

What do you say about one of the best looking Gambit costumes I’ve ever seen? Forget Taylor Kitch: next time, let this guy play Gambit in the Wolverine movie!

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

No doubt about it, Xena had one of the best detailed costumes, down to the scrollwork on the armor and the gorgeous chakrum.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

“Honey, I don’t know if we survived the attack... but you and Junior can join me in slaughtering all of Westeros now!”

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Waiting on line for a Marvel signing I ran across this killer Bishop costume. That is a terrifyingly big gun, but it wouldn’t be Bishop without it.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Continuing the X-Men streak we’ve got this phenomenal Dark Phoenix. Who needs the Phoenix Five when you have classic destruction incarnate?

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

This costume made my nerdy heart happy with a fantastic Ruffio from Hook!

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Frank Castle has nothing on her—Lady Punisher’s on the case.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Lady Loki—Tom Hiddleston might have the movie locked down, but this is a great rendition of the Trickster God we know and love.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

“Excuse me, it’s kind of hard to see in this thing... anyone seen a Little Sister around?”

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

The creepiest. Smile. Ever.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

No wait, I take it back. Also this cosplayer was the keeper of the best Joker impression I’d ever heard. Sent shivers clear down my spine when he laughed!

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Nick Fury’s clearly on the case to secure the Tesseract, and he’s got some help from Luke Cage and Black Widow.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

He might be trying to look innocent, but anyone who knows Hellblazer knows that John Constantine is anything but innocent.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Suddenly Seymour was standing in front of me—along with an Audrey and Audrey II. The mouth even moved on the plant!

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

This was one of two amazing Moxxi’s that I ran across, battling Borderlands characters out in the lobby. My favorite detail? The coat in the back stays flipped up.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

And here’s Moxxi Number Two, all dolled up and ready to be awesome.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

What does the Man-Bat say? Probably ‘skreee!’

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Old school Storm meets new school Storm in two fantastic takes on the character.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Minions are popular this year and these two had a great kicking fight/dance, all for the camera.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Kratos brings with him his own goddess to the convention.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

All the pieces have come together and this giant robot was on his way to the Voltron panel when I caught up to him.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Gotham’s ex-district attorney is less Dark Knight then Animated Series and all fantastic.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Speaking of Gotham villains, it’s like an Arkham Asylum Christmas card!

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Back on the job as a wonderful service dog, we have Cap-Dog!

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

Looks like Shredder finally got those Turtles. Poor guys, but great costume.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

There are few things more badass then a tiny Black Canary going after someone with a good, old-fashioned Canary Cry. And who is she fighting?

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

A smiley Elektra! She might look so cheerful because she likes her odds in this fight. Though I’m sure her mom wouldn’t like her stabbing her sister.

NYCC 2013 Cosplay

And rounding out the gallery, Wolverine is on the loose... and his dad, Deadpool, is trying to keep him contained. Good luck there, DeadDad!

That’s the round up for this year, folks! Thanks for all the cosplayers who shared their costumes this year and took their time to let me get these photos.

Yeah, the victorian lady thor rocks that hammer and outfit.

Thanks for sharing the pictures for those of us who couldn't be there

And of course in the picture at the head of your article, a great-looking squadron from Attack on Titan, the very cool new sf anime title about a future where the remains of humanity are trapped inside a series of huge walls that keep pseudo-human people-eating giants at bay. It's been a long time since I've seen a series catch fire like this, but it's so fun to watch it's drawing lots of new fans in. (The first season of the anime can be seen free and legally (ad-supported) on crunchyroll.com.)

Yeah, I'm a fan.

Not sure if i get all this victorian age/ steam punk cross over to other genres. It seems to be an all or nothing. The Victorian female Thor is a beautiful dress with a couple of buttons, flash of red, and a Hammer. As a pure Victorian costume, great, but why the Hammer? Just because you have the hammer doesn't mean it is a Thor costume.

Apart from it obviously being a Thor costume, I believe it's a Thor costume because she says it's a Thor costume.

Without the hammer, I would not immediately think "Victorian Lady Thor!" However, there are key elements of Thor's garb in her costume that would eventually lead me to say, "Aha! Victorian Lady Thor!" YMMV, obviously.

Lots of great costumes here. People are so creative. Thanks for sharing.

I have to admit, part of me is like "What is the point of a Victorian Lady Thor? What does it MEAN?" - which is not to say that it's not an awesome costume, I just don't quite get the appeal of that type of crossover. That's jsut me - obviously, she's rocking it, enjoying it and other people are too.

So many things jumped out at me I wanted to comment on! First of all - little kid cosplay, always great :)

I LOVE the mother/daughter weeping angels. I have to send that to my sister. I hope my family and I can do a group cosplay one day (once we did dress up for Halloween as Beru, Obi-Wan and baby Luke when my son was a baby).

Love the Barf, the Rufio (man, I loved that movie growing up - would never have thought of it as a cosplay option though, glad that somebody did! I'm hearing the chant in my head right now!), the Gambit and the Ewok is adorable and deadly!

Awesome cosplay all around. I prefer DadPool to DeadDad, Could be taken the wrong way. Parents of superheros do tend to end up dead.

I'm pretty sure that's Katniss from Hunger Games, not Laura Croft.

I met tiny Black Canary while I was dressed as Black Canary She was such a sweetie and the highlight of my Con

My sister and I are the minion girls - we are both super excited to be featured and totally humbled to be among some amazing costumes! Being our first year wearing costumes - it was sooo much fun!
