Welcome back to The Pop Quiz at the End of the Universe, a recurring series here on Tor.com featuring some of our favorite science fiction and fantasy authors! This week we’re joined by bestselling author Jim Butcher, whose fourteenth novel in the Dresden Files series, Cold Days, is out today...
What D&D character alignment best describes you first thing in the morning?
Lawful Evil. As long as you get out of my way and don’t talk to me until after the morning shake, everyone gets to live.
What’s your favorite method of procrastination?
Bad news: You’re about to be marooned alone on a desert island—name the five things you would bring along.
- A compass.
- A map.
- A boat.
- I don’t do islands.
Would you rather discover the fountain of youth or proof of life on Mars?
Fountain of youth, definitely. Then I could prove life on Mars myself. You know. Eventually. After macromeme.
Two roads diverge in a yellow wood: one leads toward a mysterious laboratory in which a mad scientist is currently ensconced. The other winds its way toward a tower inhabited by a powerful wizard. You could really use a snack, and it would be nice to have somewhere to crash for the night—which road do you choose?
Wizard. Most mad scientists don’t bother to establish a control group for their experiments. They just build their death rays or aeropiranha or whatever. So really, they’re mad engineers. Posers.
Jim Butcher read his first fantasy novel when he was seven years old: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. By the time he turned eight, he’d added the rest of the Narnia books, the Prydain Chronicles, every book about Star Wars he could find, a great many Star Trek novels and the Lord of the Rings to his count. So he was pretty much doomed from the start.
Jim stands accused of writing the Dresden Files and the Codex Alera. He’s plead insanity, but the jury is still out on that one. He lives in Missouri with his wife, romantic suspense and paranormal romance writer Shannon K. Butcher (who is really pretty and way out of his league), his son, and a ferocious guard dog.
