First Photos From Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing

Set to debut at the Toronto Film Festival in early September, Joss Whedon’s modern day interpretation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing stars many familiar faces from the Whedonverse. Nathan Fillion is Dogberry, Amy Acker is Beatrice, Sean Maher is Don John, Clark Gregg is Leonato, and Alexis Denisof is Benedick. The first photos from the film have appeared online! Look at them! Love them! Click any of them to enlarge.

So when precisely is it set? Now or earlier in the Twenthieth Century? The clothing style is ambiguous as to when it's set.

I'm no expert, but i'd say that the style of the snorkel and mask puts it somewhere in the last 10 years or so - probably non-specifically "current".

This should be fun! "Much Ado About Nothing" is one of my favorites of Shakespeare's plays. I know it is not his greatest but I always enjoy it.

I recently saw a version of this done in the style of an early '60s surfer movie (e.g. "Beach Blanket Bingo"). Amazingly enough it worked.

Joss Whedon is doing Much Ado About Nothing? Really? That doesn't seem right. I must have missed the scene in the play where Benedict dies just as he and Beatrice are about to get together. Or the one where Hero is ripped from Claudio's arms and transformed into a 9 ft. tall demon that Claudio is then forced to kill. Because I can't believe Joss Whedon is going to do a story that ends with not one but two couples living happily ever after.

I am so excited to see this: one of my favorite Shakespeares + Whedon and his people!!

At this rate, Much Ado About Nothing is going to become an honorary science fiction play. Last year we had the Doctor and Donna in it, and now there is Malcolm Reynolds.
