The Dark Tower is Coming to HBO

Stephen King’s THE DARK TOWER, to be adapted by HBOFor anyone who’s read Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series, it probably seems suitable that the television and film adaptation has long been in limbo. For a few years now, news of the adaptation has popped up at various times as news (both good and ill) surfaces, from vague promises to casting announcements to budget cuts. Now, it seems like fans finally have some news that’s worth getting excited about. The Dark Tower is heading to HBO.

Most recently, Universal Pictures shelved the ambitious project, citing growing costs as a major concern for the series, which will consist of three films, each being bridged by a television mini-series. The project was set to star Javier Bardem, the Academy Award-winning Spanish actor best known for playing the ruthless killer in No Country for Old Men.

On the back of their mega-successful adaptions of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, and Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse books, Brian Grazer announced that HBO is picking up the reins from Universal Pictures and will be handling the television of Stephen King’s opus. Who handles the film portion of the project is still up in the air.

From MTV Movies Blog:

“We’re going to do [’The Dark Tower’] with HBO,” Grazer told us. “We’ll do the TV with HBO, and we’ll do the movie with… to be determined. We’ll do it right.”

Grazer, who believes that the previously attached Javier Bardem will still be on board as Roland Deschain, added that “Dark Tower” is going to be able to move ahead largely because he and Howard have managed to reduce the film’s substantial budget.

The MTV Movies Blog also has a video interview with Grazer where he talks with a bit more depth about the recent news and is worth watching. This project has undergone so much grief (and that $45 million cut to the budget is frightening) that it’s difficult to get too excited about it right now, but with HBO putting their weight behind the project, things are finally looking up for Roland Deschain and his Ka-tet on their march to The Tower living rooms around the world.

[We’re also reading through The Dark Tower right now! We’re only up to the second book, so there’s plenty of time to jump aboard. When we’re done, we may actually have a new HBO series to look forward to! - The Tor.com team]

This is good news, except for the part about keeping Bardem. He's just not Roland.

Well this is good, I read the first few Dark Tower books and I really liked the story, but King's writing was way too uneven (it bounced seemingly randomly between excellent and awful) for me to continue. I'll definitely be lookig forward to this.

Is it just me or does Roland look a little like Charlie Sheen in that picture

@gagecreedlives — Oh god... now I can't unsee it! At least MistyMassey will agree that Bardem is a better choice than Sheen.

I read online that Grazer said the budget cuts made the ending satisfying. I am starting to wonder if these people read these books. I am not one of the people who hate the ending, but the word satisfying is definitely not one I would use to describe it. Couple this with the rumor that they would recast the role of Susanah Dean as a white woman, makes me wonder if they will even attempt to be faithful to the books.

but HBO being involved is promising.

Awesome I can't wait to see how HBO works in the required breasts and full frontal male nudity with the obligatory homosexual love affair between Roland and Eddie....

If they only had a time machine to go back and get a middle aged Clint Eastwood it would be perfect.

Clive Owen could pull off a middle aged Eastwood.

This is great news. I was just saying yesterday that the only way I want to see The Dark Tower done is on HBO.

Of course, there's still the movie but I still have hopes that someone will come to their senses on that.

Just as long as they keep Ron Howard away from this. The wrong director for this.

The fact that they think this needs a big budget tells me most of what I need to know about this project. Minor spoiler: how much money does it take to do a desert, a tiny wild west town, more desert, a deserted gas station, a tunnel, and a wooded trail? How about an airplane, a restaurant, a department store, and a beach? Film the flashback stuff in the sets they used for Game of Thrones. This should have come in at a rough budget of $40-50 million per book, max.
