Decade’s Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movies Viewer’s Poll

Tor.com Decades Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movies Viewers Poll

Here we go again.

Now that the Tor.com team is rested and refreshed from the Best SFF Novels of the Decade Reader’s Poll, we’re turning our gaze away from the printed word and towards the silver screen. We’re asking Tor.com readers to choose the best science fiction and fantasy movies of the first decade of the 21st century!

We’re in favor of eleven-year decades, so any movie published from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2010 is eligible. There’s no limit to how many you can pick, and to assist you we’ve assembled a cheat sheet of science fiction/fantasy films that have come out in the past eleven years. (Download as a spreadsheet or plain text file.)

All votes should be written in the comments below. If you vote for a series (like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings) please note that you are doing so. Series will be counted as one vote for every eligible movie in that series.

We also ask that you limit the voting to movies that enjoyed a wide release in theaters or were otherwise notable. You can vote for all of the cash-in Pokemon cartoon movies, but that’s not quite in the spirit of the best SFF movie of the decade. Also, as much as we love Sharktopus, Transmorphers, or Supervolcano, we’ve refrained from opening up those particular B-movie floodgates in the list linked above. Voting for something like Primer, however, though and independent film with a very limited release, would by very much in the spirit of the proceedings.

Please vote only in the comments below. We’ll tabulate the films mentioned in the comments from now until 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, April 24th. The ten with the highest number of votes will be highlighted in a series of appreciation posts here on the site. And, of course, there will be other nice surprises. (Hey, we weren’t kidding last time, were we?)

Seeing as how the last poll we ran resulted in perhaps the greatest fantasy novel of our time, we’re definitely excited to see what results from the greatest SFF movie results!

We’ll be updating the votes regularly here on Tor.com, Facebook, and Twitter until the end of voting, so keep checking back. And rally your friends to vote on your favorite!

Well, I didn't see it on the list but since Meyer's films are on there:

"Let the Right One In"

Edit:
Aw, heck I'll vote for a few this time around:

"Spirited Away"
"V for Vendetta"
"Watchmen"
"How to Train Your Dragon"

and another one that's not on the list but edges towards Sci-Fi (although we're just about there with the social media sites now...)

"Summer Wars"

Of course it's got to be The Return Of The King since it's the only fantasy or sf film to recieve the Oscar for best picture.

I wanted to vote for The Matrix (not the series, only the first), but turns out it was released in 1999.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind comes first, without a shadow of a doubt.

I'd give honourable mentions to:
Inception
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
V for Vendetta
The Dark Knight
9
District 9
Moon

and if Primer (which I've yet to see) makes it to the list, why not Mr. Nobody, which is also largely smart SF with a limited release (including the first orbital tower/beanstalk I've ever seen on the big screen) and definitely belongs in the above company ?

My original list had 28 films on it. I told myself I could only have 10 and whittled it down to these:

Pitch Black - pretty much the perfect SF/horror cross
Lord Of The Rings Extended Edition (because it really is one massive 11 hour movie) - they aimed high, and hit their target
Franklyn - The best movie you've never heard of
Stranger Than Fiction - the best SF&F-disguised-as-Mainstream film of the decade
Finding Nemo - my favourite of the Pixar films (and not on the Tor.com list, but fish can't talk so it is Fantasy)
Moon - the best trad SF film of the decade
Enchanted - my favourite non-Pixar "kiddy film" of the decade
X-Men - my favourite of the comic book adaptations
Shaun of the Dead - best RomZomCom of the decade (and not on the Tor.com list!)
Howl's Moving Castle- my favourite of the Studio Ghibli offerings (and also not on the list. Grrrr...)

(Some more films missing from the Tor.com list are The Incredibles, Cars, Up, Fantastic Mister Fox and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World)

Reading through the Cheatsheet, I'm really surprised at how many of these I've seen -- yay, Netflix! :) In any case here are my favorites, all of which I bought for my DVD library because I liked them that much:
- The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
- District 9
- Pitch Black
- Paprika
- Batman Begins
- The Incredibles
- Spirited Away
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

- Star Trek 2009
- Monsters, Inc.
- How to Train Your Dragon

I'm disappointed that no one's mentioned "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" yet. I am glad that "Serenity"s on the list, though. Here are a few others that certainly should be:

I don't want to pick too many, so I figure I will limit myself to one film/series per year (which was a bit of a challenge). I also used the list provided, since I was struggling to remember what was made in the 00s vs the 90s.

Year: Movie (why)
2000: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (first movie I bought on DVD)
2001: Monsters, Inc (which I picked because...)
2002: Lord of the Rings (...I needed to put LOTR here, since there was nothing else)
2003: Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl (because I already used LOTR)
2004: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (because I love Gary Oldman, even if he was only in it for a few minutes and the movie was generally average)
2005: Serenity (my #1 choice)
2006: Idiocracy (a scathing commentary on present society, while presenting a cringe-worthy, yet entertaining-from-a-distance dystopia)
2007: Stardust (I'm ashamed to be a romantic at times, but sometimes I'm not)
2008: Batman series (because I felt bad that I couldn't include Batman Begins in 2005, and Dark Knight was a good bit of fun)
2009: Coraline (Harry Potter was mediocre, I refuse to select an odd numbered Star Trek, and I haven't seen any of the others)
2010: Toy Story 3 (I was torn between this and How to Train Your Dragon, but when push comes to shove, I'm in Pixar's pocket)

This is hard. I kind of wish it were a vote for the 5 worst movies. That'd be a lot easier.

If Matrix had been released in the last decade, I'd have added it to the list too (with the caveat that it's alone, not as a series because otherwise, it'd be on the other list).

So here's five choices:

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Pan's Labryinth
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Iron Man
Inception

This was tough. On the one hand there were a lot of sf/fantasy movies in the last 11 years that arguably deserve to be recognized on a list such as this, and on the other hand it drives me nuts that my 100th-place choice gets the same number of points as my 1st-place choice.

I finally decided to stick to the movies I would most want to see on the collective list, and still wound up 63 titles. These are ranked below in descending order of personal enthusiasm based on such subjective criteria as sensual, emotional and intellectual appeal, with "creative use of genre tropes" being a strong weighting factor. (And I'd give double points to the top 10 if I could.) (Aaand, I guess with 28 titles--that's 4 out of 9--being animated, I guess I have to admit I'm a total animation nerd.)

After much deliberation (and the realisation that that cheat sheet is a great aid for ordering films to watch), I've gone for:

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

I can't believe there isn't more Minority Report love on here - I know it was ten years ago, but it's a classic film!

Can I vote for "The Lord of the Rings" as one long film?

Otherwise, I didn't see anything on the list that really jumped out at me as a great movie. Lots of good ones (e.g. "9," "District 19") or fun ones ("Batman Begins," Spider Man 2," "Pirates of the Caribbean," etc.), but nothing great. An amazing number of bad ones, a fair number of good ones, amazingly few great ones. Some I'll have to re-watch or add to my list, but no amount of money would get me to sit through most of these (like Star Wars 1 or 2, Sky Captain, Riddick, etc.) again!

My runners up would probably be:

a lot of people would say it's a straight horror movie but Silent Hill is a movie that definately takes place in it's own world with the same sort of ideas, 'rules', and 'magic' you'd find in a fantasy setting.

Hmm.. this is a tough one, but I ultimately narrowed it down to what I feel are the three greatest "stand alone" movies of the last decade, that is without too big a pre-movie fanbase

Kick Ass (2010)
Just a wonderful movie, Iknow about the comics, but that's AFTER I saw the movie. I mean what more fantasy than a normal half-nerdy guy stepping up for what's right?

Diner fight guy 1: The fuck is wrong with you, man? You'd rather die for some piece of shit that you don't even fucking know?
Dave Lizewski(Kick-ass): The three assholes, laying into one guy while everybody else watches? And you wanna know what's wrong with me? Yeah, I'd rather die... so bring it on!

Love it!

2 District 9 (2009)
I was really looking forward to "HALO the movie" and was a little disappointed when the big boys shut it down. But what happened? Well, one of the most beautiful-
(thats without flying butterfly/sparkly glowy flying sea anemone..things.. cough-Avatar sucked-cough...),

-well written and original SF movies of the decade imho, that's what happened. In what other SF movies do you actually root for the aliens?

Big Fish (2003)
The realization that your father has been romanticising everything he's tought you while growing up should hit everyone in just that little special place in their heart that screams "but my father is invincible!"

The realiziation that it was actually true should hit even harder. And Evan is always awesome.

Honorable mentions, NO VOTE!
All new Star Wars movies(except phantom menace, bleh!)
Batman begins
The Dark knight
V for Vendetta
LotR movies
The man from Earth
Crouching tiger hidden dragon
Hero
Moon
Stardust

Note that neither Avatar nor Inception is in there which I feel got a s**t load of more praise than they deserved, still they where good movies just not awesome. That's my 2c

The article doesn't say how many we can vote for, but I'm dropping my top five to be on the safe side:

In chronological order:
1. Shrek (best animated series out there; voting for the first movie, even though ALL FOUR are excellent).
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (I would vote the whole trilogy, but that would take three votes).
3. The Dark Knight (best Batman movie this century).
4. Iron Man (I haven't seen number 2...).
5. Inception (totally tripped me out, but a second viewing may lower my opinion).

My top pick would have to be The Return of the King though. :)

Just waiting for the Wheel of Time movies. :D

Some of these were problematic or imperfect (District 9 has race issues like nobody's business, Solaris isn't as good as the earlier film, neither of which is as good as the novel), and a few are just pure entertainment (Minority Report, How to Train Your Dragon, 28 Days Later), but I think that there are elements of all of these that deserve recognition:

Spirited Away
28 Days Later
Minority Report
Solaris
Code 46
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Fall
Pan's Labryrinth
Stranger than Fiction
V for Vendetta
District 9
Moon
How to Train Your Dragon
Inception
Never Let Me Go

Lord of the Rings - with Return of the King being particularly awesome
Inception
How to Train Your Dragon
Monsters Inc.
Toy Story 3
Signs
Serenity
Spirited Away
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Avatar
Star Wars II and III (Phantom Menace was 1999 so we can't count it anyway - phew)
Harry Potter 4 (not that the others aren't good - that's just the best of them)

And there are probably a ton more that I can't think of, but those are my favorites.
