Coming Soon: Dirk Gently trailer

Following in the wonderfully quirky footsteps of Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes, Dirk Gently has finally arrived at the BBC—and he’s looking good! Based on Douglas Adams’ Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, Stephen Mangan stars as the oddball holistic detective in the upcoming weekly series. The show is listed as “coming soon” to BBC Four, and while it’s not clear if/when Dirk Gently will be available in the U.S., given our first glimpse at the trailer below, we hope it’s sooner rather than later:

I second the *SQUEE* and add an "It's about time" (pun intended).

You have no fraking idea how insanely excited I am about this. It combines two of my favorite things: Stephen Mangan and Douglas Adams. When the last H2G2 book came out he read a few chapters from it for BBC Radio and it was phenomenal. If you have no clue who Stephen Mangan is, check out the awesomely hilarious show Green Wing...it's on Hulu.com

Been looking forward to this since it was first announced (along with ridley scotts man in the high castle Beeb adaptation) but...just one 1 hour episode?! Sherlock didn't last long either but at least that had 3 eps. Bit of a wasted opportunity to do it justice unless this does well and they commission more, thankfully over here they're not quite as ruthless as american tele executives.

This Dirk should at very least still be overweight and wear a ridiculous hat. Don't you think?

I'm also a Stephen Mangan fan, but my heart has already been given to the radio version with Harry Enfield as Dirk, so *squee-with-reservations*. Here's hoping I can love them both :-).

Stephen Mangan can currently be heard in the comedy radio series Elvenquest, available on BBC iPlayer.

I actually went to school with Stephen Mangan and I can confirm he is a very funny guy. Bear in mind his CV includes Adrian Mole and Green Wing just for starters (I hadn't known he'd been in a TV adaptation of Watership Down ;-), and he's been doing comedy on BBC Radio for some time (see Elvenquest as mentioned by @carrie80 above).

Yes, please come!

I just hope BBC America doesn't do an Americanized version. That said, should they do an Americanized version perhaps Saul Rubinek could take the title roll?

NotACat @10: He also did a really funny 1 series show called Free Agents with Sharon Horgan (Pulling) and Anthony Stewart Head, though that's harder to track down stateside...He also starred in a movie that's had a real indie distribution called Beyond the Pole. If you can find it, see it. It's great in all kinds of ways...also Alexander Skarsgaard is adorable in it.

And you are a very lucky notcat :)

In order to solve the crime of the century, you have to solve the century.

Oooo. Dirk Gently was a book that stuck with me. Getting lost on the road and following other cars? Yes. The couch in the stairway? Yes. Go Brits! Do us proud again!

Excited about the potential but seriously, that was the most interesting trailer they could put together? Depending on which book they're working from this show could involve a variety of greek gods, extensive time travel, aliens, a robot monk on a horse, to name but a few...and you've got a thin guy with slightly whacky hair saying some stuff.

That is totally awesome! Can't wait to see it!
