12 Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks Who Made a Difference

OrcAs a teen, I was warped by reading swords and sorcery novels, painting miniature goblin and dwarf figurines, and collecting polyhedral dice. Twenty-five years later, I wrote the book Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks to unearth the root of my attraction to tales of magical powers and heroic deeds. But one quest I didn’t get around to completing: making a list of fantasy and gaming’s all-time heroes.

Who is on the all-star team of fantasy authors? Which gods eternally lodge in the Valhalla of gaming (and by “gaming,” we don’t mean Texas Hold-Em, we mean Dungeons & Dragons). Who had the most influence on the genre?

I’ve given it a shot (listed here by year of birth). Several didn't make the cut. I have my biases. Of course, you’ll quibble over my selections. But isn’t that what these Top-Whatever lists are all about?

1. H.G. Wells (1866–1946)

You probably know that Wells wrote The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine. Lesser known is this: before Wells came along, science fiction didn’t exist as its own genre. Along with Jules Verne (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), Wells popularized what at the time was known as “scientific romance,” churning out tons of titles—The Invisible Man, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The First Men on the Moon—which became perennial faves for screen adaptation. Not only was Wells the wellspring of science fiction, but by publishing a book called Little Wars, detailing rules for table-top miniatures combat, he had invented the war game.

2. J.R.R. Tolkien (1892–1973)

Tolkien’s day job was teaching philology (the history of languages) and Anglo-Saxon at Oxford. But his heart was elsewhere: Middle-Earth, the setting for his books The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. His fellow profs mocked him for his tales of elves, magic rings and evil armies (although colleague C.S. Lewis understood him). By pioneering the creation of a rich, believable world complete with races, back stories, maps, poems, and languages—what he called his “legendarium”—Tolkien revived high fantasy for the 20th century, cementing his position as probably the single most influential fantasy writer ever.

3. Robert E. Howard (1906–1936)

Out of Nowheresville, Texas, a 23-year-old writer began publishing various genre stories in the pulp magazine Weird Tales. But it was Howard’s first Conan the Barbarian tale, appearing in 1932, that vaulted him into orbit. Unlike Tolkien’s “high fantasy,” Howard’s Conan stories, set in the Hyborian Age, were a brew of lower-brow fantasy, horror, mythology, and historical romance, with plenty of swordplay and encounters with the supernatural. He later became buddies with H.P. Lovecraft, and influenced writers like C.L. Moore and Fritz Leiber. But the life of swords and sorcery’s founder came to an abrupt end: He committed suicide at the age of thirty.

4. Ralph Baer (1922–)

Back in 1966, in Nashua, New Hampshire, Baer was working for a defense contractor and developed something he called the “Brown Box.” The technology was licensed to Magnavox and, in 1972, a new product was unleashed on the public: the Magnavox Odyssey, the first home video game console game that could be played on your average black and white television set. He also invented the first light gun for shooting games. What about Pong, you ask? Baer’s tennis game predated Atari’s by three years. All these firsts earn Baer the title “The Father of Video Games”—plus Corruptor of Teenage Minds and Waster of Quarters and Time.

5. Ursula K. Le Guin (1929–)

Best known for her Earthsea series and other richly-imagined novels, Le Guin also writes poetry, children's books, essays, and short stories. She sure racks up the literary awards: five Hugos, six Nebulas, the Gandalf Grand Master, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Grand Master, and nineteen Locus awards (the latter figure tops any other author). Along with Marion Zimmer Bradley (The Mists of Avalon), Le Guin proved that women can be part of the science fiction and fantasy boys-only club, infusing the genre with esoteric themes—Taoism, feminism, anarchism—that her peers shied away from.

6. E. Gary Gygax (1938–2008) and Dave Arneson (1947–2009)

In the 1960s, Gygax played table-top war games in his basement. Independently of Gygax, Arneson began melding combat rules for miniatures with the concept of players controlling not the movements of armies, but the actions of a single infantryman. The two joined forces and, in 1974, released the game-changing Dungeons & Dragons, the first commercially available role-playing game. D&D pioneered fantasy game staples such as players assuming the role of characters (i.e. fighter, wizard, thief) and working collaboratively; a behind-the-scenes director called the “dungeon master” who dreams up a fantasy realm and referees the plot; and the premise of adventuring in subterranean realms. The Doritos and Mountain Dew came later.

7. George Lucas (1944–)

Okay, so you hate the Star Wars prequels with a passion stronger than the Death Star's tractor beam. But aside from The Lord of the Rings or Star Trek, there’s probably no other fantasy or science fiction franchise more influential, and more lucrative, than Star Wars. The story of the first film, released in 1977, was more heroic romance and Joseph Campbell mash-up than hard SF; still, Star Wars and its sequels hit movie screens with an impact whose shock waves still rock Hollywood, publishing, gaming and Legoland. Lucas also founded the special effects company Industrial Light and Magic. Each year, his Star Wars realm keeps expanding like the far, far away galaxy it’s set in.

8. Ian Livingstone (1949–), Steve Jackson (1951–) and John Peake (??)

You may not have heard of these anonymous Brits. Turns out in 1974 (the same year D&D debuted), they co-founded the Games Workshop. This is the company behind the uber-popular Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Warhammer 40,000 table-top games which involve thousands of fantasy figurines and thousands of very patient players. The trio was also responsible for publishing White Dwarf magazine; bankrolling Citadel Miniatures, makers of all things little and metal; creating the single-player gamebook series Fighting Fantasy; and introducing D&D to the U.K. And then they rested.

9. R.A. Salvatore (1959–)

Robert Anthony Salvatore is a local hero for us living in Massachusetts; he was born in humble Leominster and went to Fitchburg State, where it is said he discovered a drug called fantasy. Adopting the handle “R.A.,” he wrote—a lot. Fifteen million copies of his books later (with 22 of his titles becoming New York Times best-sellers), he’s among the most successful fantasy authors out there. Salvatore is best known for his Forgotten Realms novels (based on D&D) and the Star Wars: The New Jedi Order series. Most recently, he’s become Creative Director at 38 Studios, ex-Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and Spawn comic creator Todd McFarlane’s video game company that is poised to unveil its new fantasy world to drooling gamers.

10. James Dallas Egbert III (1962–1980)

Here’s a guy who influenced fantasy and gaming in not-so-good way. In 1979, the16-year-old prodigy at Michigan State University supposedly took the game D&D “too far,” getting lost in the school’s steam tunnels on some role-playing binge, never to be seen again. Although Egbert did commit suicide a year later, the subterranean wanderings and the untimely death were unrelated to D&D. But truth arrived too late: the Egbert hullabaloo linked role-playing games with deviant, dangerous behavior, frightening a whole generation of parents—and persuading geeks everywhere to get into the game.

11. Richard Garfield (1963–)

If you’ve spent all your allowance money (and some of your retirement) on collectible card games, then you have Garfield to thank (or blame) for your habit. Garfield, the creator of Magic: The Gathering (which debuted in 1993) is credited with bringing this low-tech gaming genre to the masses. Nowadays, some six million folks in more than 70 countries play the game, a sort of a WWF smack-down between super-charged wizards. The math professor has gone on to design oodles of other card and board games, from RoboRally to the Star Wars Trading Card Game, and shows no signs of slowing down.

12. That random guy who introduced you to Tolkien or D&D

How did you first hear about fantasy books? Who gave you your first taste of role-playing games? Who led you into the Mines of Moria—those scary, thrilling dungeons of the teenage mind? In my case, it was my next door neighbor, a kid named JP, who taught me how to play D&D and inculcate a taste for slaying orcs and eating frozen pizza. I would later learn we all need an escape hatch, a place to blow off steam, and an arena to kill the baddie. We emerge into the light of day, victorious, and laden with treasure and, best of all, tales to tell.

I guess supporting the maxim that bad publicity is better than no publicity at all ... I actually first learned about D&D as a middle-schooler because of a newspaper article about James Egbert (#10). I breezed over the "lost in the steam tunnels" part to "fantasy adventures played with pencil, graph paper, and funny-looking dice" and put D&D at the top of my Christmas list. I got the Basic boxed set with the red dragon on front. The rest is history.

#12 was originally my Dad. He loved Jules Verne and took me to see 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Time Machine and a real oddball movie, Robinson Crusoe on Mars. He also introduced me to The Martian Chronicles and F451. In my 20's I had a good buddy who was astounded that I hadn't read Lord of the Rings. Our friendship was based on martial arts movies and sci-fi novels. We saw Time after Time together and the John Bakshi version of The Lord of the Rings (1978). I was also influenced by Edgar Rice Burroughs and his Martian Series.

I'll always be indebted to my neighbor Fred for introducing me to D&D in sixth grade. My 1st character was a half-elf Ranger named Crow after the guy in movie with Jack Palance chewing senery and the actor who played Christian Shepard on Lost. It took a little longer to start playing girls once I figured out I could, but I haven't looked back since. I really need to start playing again I miss it. Pass the Doritos and hands off my dice!

My neighbor brought home the Moldvay Basic Set around 1982, and this got me started on D&D. These days, I play 4E regularly with the NYC D&D Meetup group, in Manhattan. Robin, there's even some girls in the group.

Meanwhile, for the record, Robert E. Howard's first sale to Weird Tales was in1924, when he was 18 years old. And, his most famous character is properly known as Conan the Cimmerian. Conan the Barbarian is a movie and comic book character, based around REH's original creation.

My parents had the Dune and Foundation books in the bookcase above the bed. They were just getting translated and they kept buying them until we had the full collection. The rest is history...

I'll add to that are worth mentioning (among many others) - Moorcock as an author shaped the fantasy scape that formed D&D in equal measures with Tolkien and Leiber, and Richard Garriott (aka Lord British) brought the genre to the computer in a way noone previously had managed with the Ultima series. My roommate and I spent so much time playing Ultima and knock-off versions in college that we had to divide the 24 hours evenly, taking turns playing overnight and keeping the C64 constantly running.

@#3 - Crow is from Hawk the Slayer for a time of my youth that was the most awesome movie ever made.

I would also toss Jack Vance into the mix, along side LeGuin perhaps. Vance's "Dying Earth" stories were a great mix of dystopia and magic but more specifically he introduced what became the classic game mechanic of "memorizing" spells. Prior to that wizards just "did magic' - Vance introduce rules and structure to spell casting that was adopted almost whole by Gygax/Arneson for their fledging game.

And, as an 80's D&D player, no list is complete without Ed Greenwood - without Ed there is no Forgotten Realms,
probably no Dragon magazine and likely no R. A. Salvatore. Without the insanely detailed Forgotten Realms there are likely no "shared universe" TSR Books at all, no video games and no foundation for the WotC D&D Version 3 & 4 products.

I'd put in a shout-out for Ken St. Andre, the designer of Tunnels & Trolls, a fantasy roleplaying game that came out in 1975, and which proved that there was more than one way to stat up a cat.

And if I were to credit the person who brought me into roleplaying, while it would most likely be Artie Rogers, who brought the first RPG to our high-school games club, it was more likely Prof. M. A. R. Barker, author of that game, Empire of the Petal Throne, who taught me that the world is the thing.

I appreciate you leaving off Howard's death until the end, though considering you don't seem to comment on anyone else's demise, I wonder why it's necessary at all.

The Cimmerian is the only epithet Howard used, and the Howard stories are the only canon ones. The Barbarian was introduced by Weird Tales editor Farnsworth Wright, while the others are from various works by later authors. I can't recall him ever chopping anyone's head off for literacy, though, considering Conan himself could read and write. Maybe one of the later books or something.
