Revenge of the Return: Sequels Get Even

This week, Robert Rodriguez confirmed that a new script for Sin City 2 is in hand, and hopes to film this year, saying “sooner is better.”

As someone who saw Sin City, I question his enthusiasm (as a multi-celled organism, I question his enthusiasm), but it’s hard to blame him for capitalizing on sequel potential. It’s one of Hollywood’s defining traits that it doesn’t know when to quit. On the off-chance it stumbles across a good idea, it will spit out sequels until the concept is run into the ground. *cough*Matrix*cough*

As movies get more expensive, multiplex real estate gets rarer, and television gets better (in both scope and quality), movies have become all about the bottom line: what can make the studio the most money, the fastest. Ours is an era of superhero blockbusters, 3D extravaganzas, and more hurriedly-developed sequels than you can imagine. Below, ten sequels working their hardest to trick us into wasting two hours of our lives.

1. Transformers 3 (2011)

Shocker, right? Greenlit milliseconds after Transformers: Rise of the Fallen opened, Transformers 3 follows everyone’s favorite set of morphing megaliths EXPLOSIONS as they interact EXPLOSIONS with a human world that may never EXPLOSIONS understand them, in a touching EXPLOSIONS exploration of what it means to be human MEGAN FOX MOSTLY UNDRESSED.

2. Hancock 2 (2012)

For the five of you that saw Hancock: at last, the story continues.

3. Lemony Snicket Sequel 2012

This one surprises me for two reasons: firstly, those kids are old enough to rent cars by now, and secondly, while I thought the movie in itself wasn’t half bad, I was also under the impression that the movie didn’t significantly raise the profile of the books (certainly not on par with the Harry Potter franchise, or even the recent Percy Jackson movie). On the other hand, it’s not like Jim Carrey’s busy, so.

4. Ghost Rider 2 (2011)

Answering that lingering question about the Ghost Rider skull: How’d it get burned? How’d it get burned?! HOW’D IT GET BURNED? HOW’DITGETBURNEDHOW’DITGETBURNED?

5. Bloodrayne: Third Reich (2010)

You are kidding me. (In 2012, nobody step on any flaming paper bags left on your doorstep. Hollywood is just messing with us now.)

6. The Mummy 4: Rise of the Aztec (2010)

The Mummy was pure pulp. The Mummy Returns was a textbook case of Sequelitis, but the actors tried so very hard that we forgave. The third Mummy movie was a mistake. We won’t even speak of this Mummy movie.

7.  Journey to the Center of the Earth Sequel (2011)

I guess somebody in Hollywood has a crush on Brendan Fraser!

8.  Terminator 5 (2011)

This is good news; Terminator Salvation left me desperate to know what would happen to the careers of all the good actors who got heinously tricked into being in it. Depending on who got optioned for a sequel, we’ll know how many careers are spiraling.

9. Untitled Alien Prequel (2011)

Here’s an interesting one. This Alien prequel/reboot is being headed by Ridley Scott, which indicates that some level of thought has been applied. On the other hand, this is the guy who optioned the Monopoly movie, so those thought processes are pretty suspect. (Plus, an Alien movie without Ripley is no Alien movie, my friend.)

10. Constantine 2  (2012)

Start running, Tilda.

What do you think, moviegoers? Which of these sequels are just insulting? Which sound like train-wrecky good times? And which are you planning to secretly sneak into?

Genevieve is still waiting for a sequel to Silverado. She bides the time by watching other movies and reporting back on her blog.

I'll see the sequel to Hancock since I liked the first one. And I might be willing to check out Constantine 2. But the rest of them? Not a chance.

"Genevieve is still waiting for a sequel to Silverado." Nods head.

I'll take a sequel to Serenity and I'm really hopeful for a sequel to Percy Jackson that would be better than the first one.

Of the list you mentioned, I'd consider Transformers 3 and Terminator 5 if they have any chance of being decent, and my kids would force me to see a sequel to Journey irrespective of quality - but the rest, I don't think so.

Hancock was full of internal consistency problems, and too many unasked (let alone unanswered) questions. And yet there's still a lot to like about it. Most of the problems the movie had can be retconned in a sequel without being stupid. We'll see if they do.

I liked the 3rd Mummy film more than the second. That's not saying much. But I like Brendan Fraser in general. I just wish he'd do something else now.

They are all fairly atrocious. The Terminator 5 idea actually makes me physically ill.

I could suffer through the new Ridley Scott Alien prequel since I don't think Scott ever does terrible movies - but some have certainly been mediocre at best.

Also, Ripley DOES NOT equal "Alien" - the aliens equal Alien. So this re-boot (I hate that term) could be excellent if it is a wholly new and original story that just happens to have the same species of Alien antagonist...kinda like Jaws in space. Oh...wait...damn.

I think the Alien prequel has potential. We'll see if that gets squashed. The only real surprise is the Lemony Snicket sequel. Everything else is unsurprising and boring. Except Hancock which I'm curious about as I liked the first and thought they had too much material for one movie.

I bet some of those are actually reboots and "re-imaginings".

I actually think the Journey To the Center of the Earth sequel could be okay. There simply aren't that many kid-friendly adventure movies made. I think there's a real hunger for movies for kids who are, or rather fancy themselves, too old for cartoons but maybe too young for the full violent onslaught of adult action movies. The first movie was a great thrill ride for kids, who will probably like the second one too.

The Lemony Snicket one was at least an interesting failure.

I couldn't watch more than ten minutes of Ghost Rider. I wonder if the producers are aiming at a Showgirls level of legendary awfulness with a sequel...

I think I'm one of the 2 people in America who actually enjoyed Ghost Rider. I might be interested in a sequel to it.

I've barely seen any of the other first movies in the list, so I'm not really qualified to judge on those :)

No love for Constantine? It's one of Reeve's best movies. There is little-to-no line between the "constantly stoned" and "half on the otherside" looks.

Perhaps his best role since Bill and Ted.

I could see an Alien Reboot work, but it depends if it's a suspense thriller (Alien), action-adventure (Aliens), or utter garbage (III and IV).

And I think Predators deserves a mention. After all - Adrian Brody and Topher Grace as action stars? You need Robert Rodriguez to pull that off.

Strange as it may seem, that Bloodrayne sequel might actually be like the game's plot. Which...hey! Zombie Nazis! Worked for Dead Snow!

Seriously? I almost spit diet coke all over my monitor when I read that.

It's funny as hell until it actually happens.

Genevieve is still waiting for a sequel to Silverado- For that alone, I got your back from here to eternity. IMHO that was the last good Western made for a heck and gone long time, especially since the Duke died. An awesome ensemble cast and beautifully shot Silverado will always be in my top 5.

'K, let's wade into these sequels. I would like to preface this by saying that I am not into really high-brow, cinematic/script/story driven type movies. My favorite movie of all time is Big Trouble in Little China. Prime stuff there.

I know that there are some comic-book purists out there that did not like Constantine v1.0 but I like Keeanu so I could live with a second. Ditto for Terminator. Not sure where it will go but I could go for some more post apocalypse mayhem. Same for Trans 3- Megan Fox? How is that a problem? If Sandra Bullock can get and Oscar, heck, if Titanic gets an Oscar, I think the criteria is a bit skewed to begin with. Maybe if Megan played a down and out hooker type that gets redeemed somehow, like Mira Sorvino,...

I digress, some of these movies I can do without, but Hollywood is churning out wayyyy too much trash to begin with. I remember back in the day, there used to be one or two must see movies in the summer. Now it is a case where there are one or two churned out every week. The list of stuff that I want to see and miss and have to catch on video grows every year. Heck, I just saw Terminator, Salvation. Yes, there is A LOT of crap out there. But there are some gems that do get lost in the shuffle.

If they really want to reboot something, redo the tragedy that was DragonBall...

Just sayin'.

Woof™.

I'm actually looking forward to a Sin City sequel. I thought the first one was a good job, and it's not like they don't have a decent set of stories to work from. Worst case scenario is that the longer Frank Miller is working on Sin City, that's as long as we don't have to worry about a "Spirit" sequel.

Of the others, the only one I'd watch of my own free will is the Aliens reboot. Dark Horse Comics did a good job proving that you don't need Ripley for a good story in this franchise.

What constantly irritates me is why Hollywood feels the urge to keep rebooting and remaking old stories when there's so many more out there that have not yet been filmed. I mean, if they're going to botch up my favorite stories, they should at least try some new ones. Where's the Dark Tower movies? Where's Nine Princes in Amber? Where's Sandman? Dragonriders of Pern? Necroscope?
I don't want the same old crap...I want new crap.

I could stand an Alien prequel, provided Ridley Scott maintains a firm grip on things and keeps it a prequel, not some damned 'reboot' thing. It might be interesting to find out how that giant alien ship wound up on that planet, and how the Company found out about it. Too bad Dan O'Bannon's dead; getting him back on board would have been a fine idea.

(Yes, okay, the 'reboot' concept worked for Batman, but that was only because everything except the first two Michael Keaton ones were utter shite, and I'm not too sure about the second one.)

And, no, Sigourney Weaver doesn't have to be in it, but somebody good does.

And another non-reboot, simple sequel I'd like is to pick up the Conan series again. Just forget the second one ever happened, find someone hard, dark, and Frazetta-inspired to replace Arnold, and get John Milius or someone to write another good script. No need to start all over again, just pick up where the first one left off....

I'm going on record in favor of the Hancock sequel. Vince Gilligan is great, and I loved the fact that the whole movie was basically the second act of the standard three act hero movie (kinda like what Unbreakable did for Act 1). It's another superhero movie, yes, but one with more imagination than expected.

Plus, it's Will Smith. You know it'll be worth $9, if not much more than that.

NomadUK @10-

I second the Conan movie, but thought the 2nd was much better than the 1st.

Since Hollywood didn't seem to like much from Howard's work, maybe we could get one based on Robert Jordan's Conan tales.

I'm sorry for you; truly I am.

That aside, since neither film was really based directly on Howard's work (well, not on his Conan work, anyway), I'm happy to have them look at Robert Jordan. To be honest, I haven't actually read any of them; I know Conan only through the film, and that's good enough for me.
