The Movie Rewatch of Great Nostalgia: Return to Oz

Wheelers and chickens and nomes, oh my! Welcome back to the Movie Rewatch of Great Nostalgia! Today’s Nostalgia post concerns 1985’s Return to Oz, the semi-sequel to the 1939 classic film Wizard of Oz, and based on the books by L. Frank Baum. You’ve probably heard of at least one of the things in this paragraph.

Please note that as with all films covered on the Nostalgia Rewatch, this post will be rife with spoilers, so take whatever precautions appropriate. Unlike the first film I covered, though, Return to Oz is pretty easily available, so it should be no problem to watch the film so you can follow along.

Got all that? Good! So without further ado, click on to see what I thought after all these years!

The Movie Rewatch of Great Nostalgia: Willow

Hellooooo, Tor.com! And welcome to the first official entry in my Movie Rewatch of Great Nostalgia! Huzzah!

As I told you last week, our inaugural bout of sentimental longing and/or wistful affection for the past will be presented in the form of that semi-classic fantasy film of 1988, Willow.

When I told Liz and Kate that this would be our first nostalgia movie, their response immediately proved why I had chosen to do this project with them, for they both instantly turned to me and bellowed “WILLOWWWW! YOU IDEEOT!” in quavery goat voices, and this is why my sisters are the most awesome sisters evar.

Thus we settled down of an evening to rewatch this staple of our childhood viewing habits, and see how it measured up all these years later.

Dream-Casting The Wheel of Time TV Series

Well, whaddaya know. It’s happening after all.

As you know, Tor.com Bob (especially if you just clicked that link), the television rights to the Wheel of Time series have just been optioned by a major studio, this time with the approval of Robert Jordan’s estate. Which is pretty stupendous news if you’re a WOT fan. That doesn’t mean a WOT TV series is a fait accompli, of course, but it does mean that its existence is a hell of a lot more likely than it was just over a year ago – which, as you may recall, was when the whole Red Eagle/“Winter Dragon” alleged pilot debacle went down. (My thoughts on the subject at the time are at the beginning of this post.) But whatever, who cares about the legal technicalities of it all, when we can discuss the actual important conundrum now facing the fandom?

That conundrum being, of course (drumroll, please): casting. Dun-dun-DUN!

Who, WHO shall play our beloved (and not so beloved) Wheel of Time characters that we have been following for so very long? It’s a question that’s been fought over since the nineties, over and over again, but now we can start yelling at each other about it afresh, y’all! Yay!

[“Hey, a creeping kid! For my film, The Creeping Kid!”]
