Ginny (Weasley) Potter is Reporting on the Quidditch World Cup This Year

After giving some info on the history of Quidditch over at Pottermore recently, J.K. Rowling is at it again—a new section of the website has appeared for the Daily Prophet, the U.K.’s primary wizarding newspaper. What’s intriguing is the content available via the publication: coverage of this year’s Quidditch Cup from Ginny Potter (née Wealsey).

It would appear that opening ceremonies were something of a disaster this year at the Quidditch World Cup, where the Argentinian Council of Magic made an error in judgement regarding the festitivites. Apparently 300 guests were bitten and otherwise injured due to the mascot-themed ceremony. Though intended as “a magnificent exhibition of the diversity of the magizooliogcal world,” the deadly combination of the Fijan and Norwegian mascots led to panic in the stands and blood in the water.

Though the President of the Argentinian Council of Magic insisted that there was no way they could have possibly known how those two mascots would interact, Ginny gives a quote from Rolf Scamander (grandson of Newt Scamander and husband—thought they might not be married yet—of Luna Lovegood) that thoroughly scolds the council for not doing there due diligence.

Ginny Potter’s report can be found on Pottermore. Her coverage of the first match between Norway and Ivory Coast is also up!

Wonder if we’ll get coverage for the whole thing?

But here’s an interesting question to wonder at; it’s clear that Ginny is already married to Harry at this point in time, but are we meant to infer that this is her first year on the Daily Prophet staff in the real time? Rowling has said that Ginny went on the have a career as a professional Quidditch player for the Hollyhead Harpies, moving on to sports correspondence for the Prophet once she retires. According to the dates in the books, Ginny would now be 32-33 years old, which seems about the right time to retire from a major sport. (She’s probably played for about a decade?) Could this year’s Quidditch Cup be the first one Ginny ever covers after retiring from the game?

Just having a lot of Ginny Weasley feels is all.
