I’m sad to say, but Flytrap, the little zine with teeth, co-edited by writers Tim Pratt and Heather Shaw, is closing up shop. I’m always disappointed to see a market go away, and Flytrap was quite good. When I look at the lineup from the issue (more below) I’m quite impressed, and a little jealous, at the writers they published. But, real life intercedes, and as Tim notes in his journal entry:
So issue 10 is done, and we re-assessed, and decided to stop, because we could no longer give the ‘zine the attention it deserves, and we didn’t want to do a half-assed job. It went from being a pleasure to a source of stress, and we were worrying more than we were having fun, so we decided to pull the plug.
Flytrap’s pages have been graced by writers like Jeffrey Ford, Elizabeth Bear, Jeff VanderMeer, Theodora Goss, Jay Lake, Sarah Prineas, Greg van Eekhout, Sarah Monette, Alan DeNiro, and more! And while you can’t subscribe any more, you can still buy back issues.
I certainly sympathize with trying to juggle a day job and publishing a zine on top of having a family. It’s a lot of work, and sometimes you need to shuffle priorities. I know that if something happened and my family needed more of my time, the publishing stuff would have to fall by the wayside. In the end, though, if this means I get to see more writing from Tim and Heather, that’s a good thing, too.
