Science fiction is famous for looking forward, for striving to show readers the future. And Alpha, the SF/F/H Workshop for Young Writers, is a launch pad for the future of science fiction.
Authors Mike and Rachel Grinti met at Alpha and later co-wrote Claws, a magical tale of a smooth-talking cat named Jack and a girl who just wants to find her lost sister. We want to give you a copy of Claws, and also let you know how you can get involved with Alpha right now!
Founded by Diane Turnshek, Alpha is a ten day workshop for speculative fiction writers ages 14 to 19, where each student writes an original short story and participates in peer review critiques. Tamora Pierce, author of young adult series such as Protector of the Small and The Provost’s Dog, has instructed at the workshop every year since its inception. This year, additional instructors include Tobias Buckell, author of the Xenowealth series, Bruce Coville, of Into the Land of Unicorns fame and SFWA Vice President Rachel Swirsky. Past instructors have included award winning authors and editors such as Ellen Kushner, Scott Westerfeld, and Holly Black.
In a field that’s all about the future, Alpha creates the writers who will in
turn create brave new worlds. If you are between the ages of 14 and 19 and write science fiction, fantasy or horror, you can apply to Alpha here. This year’s workshop will be held July 25-August 3 in Pittsburgh, PA. Applications are due March 2. If you like the sound of Alpha and want to help the workshop, please consider donating to our scholarship fund, which helps students who couldn’t afford to attend Alpha otherwise. All donors receive a flash fiction anthology, written and illustrated by Alpha graduates, as a thank-you gift.
