Happy Banned Books Week! From September 27th-October 3rd, it’s time to revisit and celebrate the books whose subject matter was controversial enough to call for banning them from schools and libraries. You might be looking at some of the books offered in our specially themed prize pack and think, “They banned that?” But that’s part of the point of the week—to realize the kinds of reactions that certain books evoke, and to celebrate the freedom to read them. In honor of this week, Macmillan Kids is giving away four famously banned books for you to (re)discover!
Madeleine L’Engle’s Newbery Medal-winning classic A Wrinkle in Time has been challenged for citing the name of Jesus alongside other philosophers; it has been criticized for being too religious and not religious enough. American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang has been challenged for its blatant stereotyping—which exists to make a point about racism. Nancy Garden’s Annie on My Mind and Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak have come under fire for depicting (respectively) a same-sex relationship and rape. We’re giving away one prize pack with all four books.
