The CW as we once knew it is coming to an end. The network, under new ownership, has effectively cancelled most of their scripted television shows, including most of the Arrowverse, a slate of shows based on DC Comics that began with Arrow in 2012. The Flash, which premiered in 2013, is the biggest bastion of the Arrowverse remaining, and that series will end in just a week. Showrunner Eric Wallace, however, hopes that The Flash’s ending doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the Arrowverse.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wallace shared his feelings on the matter. “I’ve approached [the finale] as The Flash is over and I want to make the best Flash series finale as possible,” he said. “On the other side, of course, there’s no Batwoman. There’s no Legends. There’s no Black Lightning. There’s no Arrow or Supergirl. It is very strange. All of the shows that were on Earth-Prime, they’re all going away. So what does that mean? I don’t know.”

Wallace does know, however, that he’s left the door open on the Arrowverse with his finale, and that he hopes there will be more Arrowverse stories to tell. “I’ve wrapped up a lot of things in the series finale, and it ends on a very hopeful note that shows you how the future of the Arrowverse could continue in some way, shape, or form,” he said. “It hopefully gives people closure, but also some hope for the future […]”

With The Flash ending, only two DC shows remain at The CW: Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights. Wallace sees one of those shows as an option to keep the Arrowverse going. “I’m going to have lunch with [Superman & Lois showrunner] Todd [Helbing] in the next couple weeks,” he said. “And I’m going to tell him, ‘If you get a fourth season, you’ve got to sneak some Arrowverse in there. You are now carrying the torch.’”

The Flash series finale airs Wednesday, May 24, at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on the CW.
