Filmmaker Gareth Edwards, the director behind Rogue One and 2014’s Godzilla, is helming a new sci-fi thriller called The Creator. And if the trailer released today is any indication, it looks like it will be an epic film in every sense of the word.

Evil AI has taken over the world! Or, at least, that’s what the surviving humans want you to believe. While it does seem clear that the artificial intelligence that humans created went rogue and dropped a nuclear bomb on Los Angeles a decade back, what we see of the AI contingent later on in the trailer suggests that things may be more complicated than that. In it, we see whole societies with AI populations that seem, at least in the glimpses we see in the trailer, to be more civilized than the surviving humans.
Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:
Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (John David Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.
What makes the kid AI different from the other humanoid androids we see in the film? It’s not clear yet, but I have a good bet that the answer might be more complicated than the synopsis suggests.
In addition to Washington and Chan, who you’ve seen in films like Tenet and Eternals respectively, the movie stars Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles, and Allison Janney (I, Tonya).
