The Black Girl Survives in This One
Desiree S. Evans writes fiction for children, teens, and adults. She is co-editor of the anthology, The Black Girl Survives in This One, and a contributor to the anthologies Cool. Awkward. Black. and Foreshadow. Desiree is a 2020 winner of the Walter Dean Myers Grant for children’s fiction awarded by the nonprofit organization We Need Diverse Books. She received her MFA in fiction from the Michener Center for Writers at The University of Texas at Austin and is currently the Southern Studies Fellowship in Arts and Letters Writer-in-Residence in Spartanburg, SC.
Saraciea J. Fennell is a Black Honduran American writer, founder of The Bronx is Reading, and creator of Honduran Garifuna Writers. She is also a book publicist who has worked with many award-winning and New York Times bestselling authors. Fennell is board chair for Latinx in Publishing Inc., as well as on the Advisory Board of People of Color in Publishing. She lives in the Bronx with her family and dog, Oreo.

The following has been excerpted from a letter from the editors by Desiree S. Evans and Saraciea J. Fennell:
We believe it’s far time for Black writers to be given more space on the horror scene, as horror is a genre we’ve often been pushed to the margins of. As horror expands, as it becomes more imaginative and inclusive, now is the time to ask: Who gets to tell scary stories? Who gets to be the hero, the monster, the villain, and the savior in these stories?
Where are the Black Final Girls?
This anthology is our attempt to answer that question by bringing together an amazing array of Black writers to craft new, exciting, and terrifying horror stories for young adults. The kind of stories we always wanted as a teen horror fan. This anthology will showcase the talent, range, and creativity of these writers, and be an example for how these new kinds of stories can unfold both on the literary scene and in Hollywood. We need more Black horror stories and more Black Final Girls.
