Remember way back in 2018, Netflix’s released the first Sandra Bullock-starring thriller, Bird Box, based on the book by Josh Malerman? The streaming platform sure does — the film was reported to be the most-watched film on Netflix at the time — and it’s no surprise that we’re going to get some more stories told in this universe, where aliens invade Earth and make anyone who look upon them go insane.

The first Bird Box movie mostly takes place a bit after the aliens have landed, albeit with some flashbacks. The new feature, Bird Box Barcelona, however, appears to take place right as the invasion starts, with tens of thousands of people dying and the survivors trying to figure out what the heck is going on.

Here’s the synopsis for the sequel, which actually sounds like a prequel:

From the producers of the global phenomenon, Bird Box, comes Bird Box Barcelona, an expansion of the film that riveted audiences in 2018. After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows.

The movie is written and directed by Álex Pastor and David Pastor (the first film adaptation was penned by Arrival and Shadow and Bone screenwriter Eric Heisserer) and is produced by Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, Núria Valls, Adrián Guerra, Josh Malerman and Ryan Lewis. It stars Mario Casa, Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Diego Calva, Patrick Criado, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia.

Bird Box Barcelona becomes available on Netflix starting July 14, 2023.
