HBO Backs Another Game of Thrones Prequel—A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight

There have been rumblings of a show based on the Dunk and Egg novellas for years now, and those rumors have now become confirmed news: a series about the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall (aka Dunk) and a  young boy (aka Egg), has gotten an official order at HBO.

Warner Bros. Discovery broke the news today that a show, whose official title is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: A Hedge Knight, is moving forward, and that the prequel series—which takes place about 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones—will be written and executive produced by George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker. Ryan Condal, who showruns the other Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon, will also executive produce, as will Vince Gerardis.

Here’s  A Hedge Knight‘s official logline:

A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

It’s still early days, but we know it’s based on three novellas by Martin called The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight, which in 2015 were collected into one volume titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

This show is not the only Game of Thrones spin-off in the works. A few weeks ago we learned that there’s another project in the works centered on the first Targaryen king of Westeros, Aegon I. House of the Dragons is also coming back to HBO with a second season, which just started production in the U.K.

No news yet on who will be playing Dunk or Egg, or when the show will make it to HBO.
