David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson’s Mulder and Scully from the original run of The X-Files (pictured above) hold a special place in many a fan’s heart. And while they’ve reprised their characters in two movies and, most recently, in two new seasons, these newer installments were decidedly less well-received.

There’s a chance, however, that we might get new projects in the X-Files universe, and one of them may be backed by Ryan Coogler, the writer-director of both Black Panther films as well as the director of the first Creed movie.

In an interview on On The Coast With Gloria Macarenko (via Bloody Disgusting), X-Files creator Chris Carter praised the wonders of shooting the show in Vancouver thirty years ago and also threw in a little tidbit that we might see more X-Files in the future.

The Mimicking of Known Successes

The Mimicking of Known Successes

“I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast,” Carter said. “So he’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory.”

What or how Coogler would be involved is still unknown—the writer-director also runs a production company (a company that is behind the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series, Ironheart, among other projects), so there’s a chance he may be producing rather than directly helming a movie or series.

It’s also not clear whether the project Coogler is reportedly working on is the animated comedy series X-Files: Albuquerque, announced in August 2020. We haven’t heard much about that series since then, though it supposedly centers on the “B-Team” of FBI Agents tasked with investigating the goofier X-files. (Though aren’t Mulder and Scully by definition the B-Team, since they’re already shunned by all the normies in the FBI?)

I know nothing, but my bet is the Coogler X-Files project is something welcomingly different. It’s also the first recent X-Files news I’m genuinely excited for as Coogler is a genius-level storyteller. Because of this, I want to believe that Carter’s cringe-inducing comment is not only true, but means that we’ll get more news about this project sooner rather than later.
