Today, the second season of Shadow and Bone, adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s novels, premieres on Netflix. The series wraps in characters and storylines from both her Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows series, though leans into the main plot from the former—the fold in Ravka, the Darkling, the special powers of Sun Summoner Alina.

Those of us who hoped that season two might go a bit in the other direction—and perhaps include the ice court heist from Six of Crows—were disappointed when showrunner Eric Heisserer said they would not be using that story this time around. Though what he said was tantalizing: “That is a beefy and robust story that requires its own lane.”

And by “its own lane,” what he maybe meant was “its own show.” Heisserer has now told Entertainment Weekly that he’s been working on a Six of Crows spinoff—which would absolutely include the elaborate heist from the duology’s first book.

“There’s a lot of work that’s gone into the planning of this. The hope is then we get to act on that planning,” Heisserer told EW. “But of course, it’s about how well season 2 numbers do.”

It turns out that the reason Heisserer has a co-showrunner, Daegan Fryklind, for season two of Shadow and Bone in part because he was working with a writers’ room for Six of Crows. According to EW:

The Six of Crows spin-off “would be its own little season of fun that our characters would get to be a part of,” Heisserer says. And with Fryklind shouldering the showrunning duties on the mothership show, the idea would be to run both Six of Crows and Shadow and Bone simultaneously.

Not to be greedy, but Six of Crows would obviously need two seasons: one for the heist, and one for the events of Crooked Kingdom, which bring much more closure to the gang.

But we shouldn’t count our crows before they’re hatched. Shadow and Bone is on Netflix now; the future of the Crows remains uncertain. “According to sources, the show is in early stages and isn’t close to getting a green light,” EW notes.
