Sara Downing’s I Let You Fall Wins 2023’s Fantasy Romantic Novel Award

The Romantic Novelists’ Association (RNA) announced the winners of their Romantic Novel Awards yesterday in London, and I Let You Fall by Sara Downing won the Fantasy Romantic Novel amid a strong group of finalists.

I Let You Fall centers around a London art teacher named Eve Chapman who suffers a major head injury and finds herself in spectral form as her body remains in a coma. No one can hear Eve except for Luca Diaz, a lawyer who is also in a coma and whose spectral form is just as handsome as his corporeal one. Luca teaches Eve how to navigate her new situation, but as she tries to find a way back to her body and Nathan, the man she loves, she begins to wonder if she really wants to head back to her old life.

The other finalists for this year’s award, which encompasses romance novels that have paranormal or speculative elements, include Hidden in the Mists by Christina Courtenay, Skip to the End by Molly James, Impossible by Sarah Lotz, and Ocean’s Echo by Everina Maxwell.

“Once again the judges have had the almost impossible task of choosing winners for each of our romantic awards categories,” RNA Chair Jean Fullerton said in a statement. “Huge congratulations to our worthy winners.”

The RNA has been issuing these awards since the 1960s and has been a part of the UK romance novel landscape for just as long. The awards, unlike most others in the space, are judged by readers and not by professionals in the industry. You can learn more about the RNA and the other award winners on their website.
