Guillermo Del Toro to Direct Animated Adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant

Guillermo Del Toro is returning to the world of animation after his critically acclaimed Pinocchio rendition, which came out this year at Netflix. This time, he’s adapting author Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2015 novel, The Buried Giant.

According to Deadline, Del Toro is working with Netflix once again to adapt the book into a stop-motion animated feature, and is partnering (also once again) with ShadowMachine, the studio that worked on Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio.  He is producing as well as directing the project, and is co-writing the script with Dennis Kelly (Matilda the Musical).

The Buried Giant continues my animation partnership with Netflix and our pursuit of stop-motion as a medium to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds,” Del Toro told Deadline in a statement. “It is a great honor and greater responsibility for me to direct this screenplay which Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel.”

The Buried Giant follows a couple, Axl and Beatrice, in a magical version of post-Arthurian England where almost no one retains any long-term memories. The two are traveling to a nearby town to visit their son, who they admit they don’t readily remember, and face many challenges and people along the way.

No news yet on when we’ll see this project on Netflix, but given how long it takes to complete stop-motion features, we’re likely a few years out from seeing Axl and Beatrice on screen.
