Frog and Toad, Arnold Lobel’s four-book Caldecott and Newbery Award-winning series, is getting a television adaptation at Apple TV+. The show comes from Rob Hoegee (Stillwater, Niko & the Sword of Light) and is animated by Titmouse, the studio behind Star Trek: Lower Decks, Big Mouth, and The Legend of Vox Machina.

Apple gives us some details on the television series’ adaptation of the 1970s books, which remain popular to this day. Take, for example, the show’s official synopsis:

Frog is a frog. Toad is a toad. They have a lot in common… but they are also very different. Frog and Toad are best friends who know that the true secret to friendship is not only enjoying the things you have in common, but embracing the things that make you different. Our differences are what makes us special, and Frog and Toad celebrate them in what makes them unique.

What the Apple press release doesn’t make clear, however, is whether the show will honor the books’ emphasis on same-sex love, something that Lobel’s daughter, Adrianne, has said was likely a precursor to Lobel ultimately coming out to his family as gay. Given that Adrianne is one of the executive producers of the TV series, however, might bode well that it will.

The series also boasts an impressive voice cast, including Nat Faxon (Our Flag Means Death) and Kevin Michael Richardson (The Simpsons, Family Guy) as Frog and Toad. It also includes appearances from Ron Funches (Trolls), Fortune Feimster (Good Fortune, Kenan), Cole Escola (At Home with Amy Sedaris), Aparna Nancherla (The Great North), John Hodgman (Up Here), Yvette Nicole Brown (Disenchanted), Stephen Tobolowsky (The Goldbergs), Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Selene Luna (Coco), Margaret Cho (Fire Island) and Betsy Sodaro (Duncanville).

Frog and Toad premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, April 28, 2023.
