A Film Adaptation of Hunter’s Run — Co-Authored by George R. R. Martin, Daniel Abraham, and Gardner Dozois — Is in the Works

Add another one to the list of works by George R. R. Martin (and, for that matter, Expanse co-author Daniel Abraham) that’s set to get the adaptation treatment. Variety reports that Exile Content Studio has “pounced” on the film rights to the novel Hunter’s Run, co-written by Martin, Abraham, and Gardner Dozois.

As Variety puts it, “The sci-fi tale is the only one among Martin’s body of work that features a Latino lead, making it a natural fit for Exile Content which has produced a slew of content in Spanish and English.”

Hunter’s Run was published in 2007, and is an expanded version of a previous novella called Shadow Twin. The summary says:

Running from poverty and hopelessness, Ramón Espejo boarded one of the great starships of the mysterious, repulsive Enye. But the new life he found on the far-off planet of São Paulo was no better than the one he abandoned. Then one night his rage and too much alcohol get the better of him. Deadly violence ensues, forcing Ramón to flee into the wilderness.

Mercifully, almost happily alone—far from the loud, bustling hive of humanity that he detests with sociopathic fervor—the luckless prospector is finally free to search for the one rich strike that could make him wealthy. But what he stumbles upon instead is an advanced alien race in hiding: desperate fugitives, like him, on a world not their own. Suddenly in possession of a powerful, dangerous secret and caught up in an extraordinary manhunt on a hostile, unpredictable planet, Ramón must first escape . . . and then, somehow, survive.

And his deadliest enemy is himself.

Variety quotes Martin as saying, “I’m so pleased that after almost 16 years, Hunter’s Run will be made into a film. I’m bursting with excitement for the rich sci-fi universe I helped create with my dear friends Daniel and Gardner to exist beyond the pages of our book.”

The film adaptation will be directed by Mark Raso (Kodachrome), who co-wrote the script with his brother Joseph. The two are also the writers of the Netflix movie Awake. Martin is one of the film’s producers, along with Game of Thrones producer Vince Gerardis.

There’s no word yet on cast or release date.
