If it’s been a minute since you last saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, well, that’s understandable. But the new trailer for the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Part One, has got you covered. As Miles’ mom (Luna Lauren Velez) makes Miles (Shameik Moore) promise that he’ll remember where he came from, the trailer revisits some of the moments that led Miles to the present.

And then, to put it briefly, all hell breaks loose—in the form of a whole lot of Spiders-Men.

We’re no longer going into the Spider-Verse but across it—though dimensions and multiverses and up against (or in cahoots with) presumably even more Spider-Folk than were introduced in the last go-round. Here’s the summary:

After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

“We are supposed to be the good guys,” Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) says. Meanwhile, Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 can be heard asking, “Who do you think you are, really?” in what might be described as an aggressive tone. The trailer showcases some of the vivid animation styles of the multi-verse, but is—appropriately—a huge tease, never quite letting on what kind of adventure we’re in for.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Part One is directed by Kemp Powers (a writer on Star Trek: Discovery), Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender), and Justin K. Thompson (production designer on the first movie), with a screenplay by Phil Lord, returning producer Christopher Miller, and David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Additional producers include Lord, Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Christina Steinberg. The rest of the cast includes Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Brian Tyree Henry, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, Rachel Dratch, Jorma Taccone, and Shea Whigham.

Swing into theaters on June 2, 2023.
