We’re thrilled to share the map for Witch King, Martha Wells’ first new fantasy in over a decade—a remarkable story of power and friendship, of trust and betrayal, and of the families we choose. Get a full look at Rhys Davies’ map below, along with the initial sketch and a note from author Martha Wells.

I’ve always loved the maps in SF/F novels. When I was growing up, I drew maps of imaginary places all the time. I made them in sections using sheets of drawing paper as puzzle pieces to construct maps that were five to six feet wide and covered our living room floor. In the Fort Worth Public Library, I found the 1979 edition of An Atlas of Fantasy by J.B. Post and checked it out over and over again until I was finally able to get my own copy. I still have it, though the spine is starting to fall apart.

I’m not a mapmaker, and the drawing ability I had in high school and college went away when tendonitis and then arthritis affected my hands. So the maps I draw for my own reference are just to help me keep directions straight for further stories in the world. I haven’t had a real beautifully drawn map for one of my books since my first novel came out in 1993, so I’m really thrilled to have this map by Rhys Davies of the world of Witch King.

Witch King arrives May 30, 2023 from Tordotcom Publishing.

Kai-Enna is the Witch King, though he hasn’t always been, and he hasn’t even always been Kai-Enna!

After being murdered, his consciousness dormant and unaware of the passing of time while confined in an elaborate water trap, Kai wakes to find a lesser mage attempting to harness Kai’s magic to his own advantage. That was never going to go well.

But why was Kai imprisoned in the first place? What has changed in the world since his assassination? And why does the Rising World Coalition appear to be growing in influence?

Kai will need to pull his allies close and draw on all his pain magic if he is to answer even the least of these questions.

He’s not going to like the answers.
