Gamera isn’t as well-known as his Kaiju brethren Godzilla and Mothra, but the turtle-inspired creature who protects children wherever he goes is getting a new movie at Netflix called Gamera Rebirth, the first Gamera film since 2006’s Gamera the Brave.

According to iO9, Netflix and Kadokawa Pictures announced the new film existed last night. There’s a lot we don’t know yet, however, including whether it will be live-action or animated (my bet is on the latter). We also don’t know who the director is, although iO9 reports that the director of the Heisei Gamera trilogy, Shusuke Kaneko, is not returning.
The franchise started with Gamera the Giant Monster, which was released in Japan in 1965. Gamera is a more kid-friendly kaiju and often features children as the movies’ main human characters. If you’re a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000, you might also have seen a Gamera movie or two (five in total, actually) during Joel Hodgson’s hosting years, much to the chagrin of Gamera director Sandy Frank and Kadokawa Pictures, the studio that owns the films.
While things are still relatively unknown about this new addition to the Gamera franchise, including when it will be released on Netflix, iO9 states that we’ll get to see images of this new Gamera at this weekend’s Bandai’s Tamashii Nations 2022 event. (ed note: and, of course, we know that Gamera is both really neat, and made of turtle meat.)
