Teasing a Studio Ghibli/Lucasfilm Partnership Without Any Details Is Just Cruel

How can they do this to us? Studio Ghibli, the monumental company behind My Neighbor TotoroSpirited Away, Princess Mononoke (pictured above) and a ton of other brilliant films, posted the vaguest of videos on Twitter today—and it has everyone in a tizzy.

It’s simple: Just the Lucasfilm logo, followed by the Studio Ghibli logo. No music. Nothing else.

How dare.

Realistically, this probably hints at a Ghibli entry in the second season of Star Wars Visions, the animated anthology series. Earlier this year, Visions executive producer James Waugh told Deadline:

The first anthology is anime because we all loved the style of it, but personally my intention for Visions was to always let it be a more broad palette, because there’s so much great animation work going on in the world. There’s so many interesting voices in all sorts of other mediums that are really focused on animation right now. And we really wanted it to be, in a way, a “sub-brand” that allowed for different creators to come celebrate Star Wars from their own unique cultural perspective. And so Visions volume two is sort of a global tour of some of the most interesting animation studios on a global level.

If you’re going to say “most interesting animation studios,” yeah, it makes sense for Studio Ghibli to be one of them. But that doesn’t mean we can’t dream of something larger. Given the brilliance with which Ghibli tells stories about young people finding themselves and their place in the world … a Studio Ghibli story about troubled young padawans would be incredible. So would a Ghibli story about Ahsoka Tano, which I now want more than just about anything.

Though I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking My Neighbor Grogu, aren’t you?

We’ll have to wait and see what this legendary team-up has to offer.
